Two MC projects earn construction awards
MONMOUTH, Ill. — At last week’s 18th Biennial Lorraine D. Wright Construction Awards banquet in Davenport, Iowa, the Quad City chapter of the National Association of Women In Construction (NAWIC) honored the professionals associated with 94 construction projects built during the past two years. Two Monmouth College projects were among a group of 35 that received awards of merit or awards of excellence.

“Both of our awards were in the ‘Education – New Construction’ category,” explained Don Gladfelter, vice president for business and finance, who attended the event and accepted the awards on the college’s behalf.

Honored were the Gracie Peterson Hall and April Zorn Memorial Stadium projects. An 87-bed residence hall, Peterson Hall was completed in 2007 at a cost of $4.5 million. It is named for legendary MC music instructor Grace Gawthrop Peterson ’22, whose former home once occupied the site of the hall.

Finishing touches are being made to the $4.2 million April Zorn Memorial Stadium, which will be formally dedicated on Sept. 5, when the Fighting Scots football team plays its season opener against Loras College. The dedication ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m., and kickoff is set for 1 p.m. The community is invited to a free “Walk the Turf Night” at the stadium on Aug. 29 at 6 p.m.

According to Deb Swift of KJWW Engineering, who serves as the local NAWIC chapter’s awards chair, the 94 projects represent about $468 million in local investment in the Quad Cities area. Projects were nominated in 15 categories, including commercial/retail, education, government, healthcare, community and arts, highways/streets/bridges and residential. A panel of judges selected the winners based on structure (building materials, style and level of complexity), aesthetics, harmony with its surrounding environment and the impact of the project on the community. Building owners, architects, engineers, general contractors, subcontractors and material suppliers who worked on those projects were honored.
