Trio named preseason All-Americans for the third time

Release Date:  July 29, 2009

MONMOUTH, Ill. Three Monmouth College football players have picked up their third preseason All-American honors, this time from a web site dedicated to Division III football.

D3football.com named senior offensive guard Josh Kotecki (Peru, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) a First Team Preseason All-American. Junior quarterback Alex Tanney (Lexington, Ill./Lexington) and senior offensive tackle Dan Schwindenhammer (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame), were named to the Second Team. The trio was named preseason All-Americans by Consensus Draft Services and Lindy’s Sports Magazine earlier this year.

The 6-foot-1, 245-pound Kotecki, was named Second Team All-American last fall by D3football.com. He helped anchor an offensive line last fall that allowed Monmouth quarterbacks to pass for a school-record 3,790 yards.

Schwindenhammer, a 6-foot-3, 260-pounder, was another key cog in the Fighting Scots’ offensive unit that balanced passing with a potent ground game.  Twelve different backs picked up a combined total of more than 2,000 yards and three ran for more than 300 yards each.

Tanney, a strong-armed 6-foot-4, 190-pound signal-caller, shattered nearly every MC season passing record including yardage (3,624) and touchdowns (50). He was ranked eighth nationally with a 166.97 efficiency rating.

The defending Midwest Conference champions return the majority of the offensive unit that led Division III in scoring with an average of 46.75 points per game. Seventy-one team and individual records were either set or tied during the 2008 campaign. The team also had top 10 national rankings in three other offensive categories including fifth in pass efficiency (166.98), seventh in total offense (460.58 ypg) and eighth in passing offense (315.83 ypg).

Monmouth opens the season Sept. 5 on its new home field surface against Loras College.
