Hughes is All-American, Turczyn advances in hurdles

Release Date: May 22, 2009

MONMOUTH, Ill. Monmouth College thrower Tanesha Hughes (Peoria, Ill./Woodruff) earned her first All-American award in her final season while hurdler Shannon Turczyn (Peru, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) stayed on track to reach outdoor All-American status for the fourth straight year after performances Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio.

Hughes, who entered the discus competition with the nation’s top throw, finished her discus career with a throw of 150’5”. The senior’s toss placed her fourth and gained her All-American status for the first time in three trips to the National Championships. Hughes was just seven inches out of a third-place finish. UW-Oshkosh’s Ellie Sitek won the discus competition with a throw of 157’3”. Hughes will make her first national appearance in the shot put Saturday afternoon.

Turczyn already has four All-American awards – including three straight in the 100-meter hurdles. The senior could complete a four-year sweep in the event and clocked a 14.40 in Friday’s prelims – her third-fastest time this season – to advance to Saturday’s finals. She is 25-hundreths back of the top qualifier and defending champion – Sumer Rohrs of Frostburg State. The 100-meter hurdle finals will be run Saturday afternoon.

Gloria Lehr (Knoxville, Ill./Knoxville), making her first appearance at the outdoor championships, threw the discus 132’3”. The junior’s effort was among her best this season, but missed the finals cut by a mere four feet.

Yesterday, sophomore Logan Hohl (Orion, Ill./Orion) qualified for Saturday’s finals in the men’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.69. Hohl, a two-time All-American indoors, will run for his first outdoor All-American honor Saturday afternoon.
