At Monmouth College, amazing academic opportunities are around every
corner. From a semester’s study in Scotland to a short-term research trip to
Singapore to a summer of collaborative research with faculty mentors to an
internship in a television station, repertory theatre or law office, the
College offers an array of programs and study options designed to match our
students’ wide-ranging curiosity and intellectual ambition.
Integrated Studies
Through this program (known as INTG), and across the curriculum, a
Monmouth education enables students to make connections between their work
in their major concentration and the breadth of their liberal arts general
education coursework. INTG spans the four years of the student’s career,
offering a sequence of topical courses beginning with Introduction to the
Liberal Arts (ILA) in the first year, Global Perspectives in the sophomore
year, Reflection in the junior year, and Citizenship, the culminating
interdisciplinary, capstone course, in the senior year.
Undergraduate Research
Monmouth students have many opportunities to engage in substantive
research with faculty members: throughout the academic year, in short-term
intensive experiences in January and August, in summers of collaborative
research in laboratories and field settings (with on-campus housing
available). These opportunities are not reserved for seniors and juniors in
the sciences, either! Many majors are structured so that students are
introduced to research methods and techniques early in their studies, and
become involved in genuine research quickly – as soon as the sophomore
year, or even the second semester of the first year.

Study-Abroad
Monmouth provides many opportunities for
study
abroad: in
short-term, credit-bearing courses led by Monmouth faculty, semester
study-abroad programs offered through the Associated Colleges of the Midwest
(ACM), and student-exchange agreements with universities in Europe, Latin
America, Africa and Asia.

Advising for National Scholarships and Fellowships
Monmouth faculty advisors are eager to assist students who choose to
pursue distinguished national scholarships such as the Rhodes, Fulbright,
Goldwater and Udall: faculty mentors will help students identify
possibilities, and will offer guidance as students review application
materials, prepare for interviews, and select course-work, study abroad and
undergraduate research opportunities, and co-curricular experiences likely
to support a compelling application.
Integrated Studies in Science and Business
The Science and Business initiative provides academic
coursework and collaborative research opportunities at the nexus of
scientific inquiry, economic analysis, and business application. Interdisciplinary courses, internships, workshops, GMAT
and MCAT
preparation, graduate-school advising, workshops and luncheons with visiting
scientists, business leaders, and policy experts, and course-related field
trips and off-campus study are all possible under the umbrella of ISSB.
The Honors Program
The
Honors Program is a special opportunity for a select group of highly
engaged and intellectually ambitious students. It involves leadership
training, an advising program geared toward preparation for graduate and
professional study, and incorporates topical, interdisciplinary courses
germane to liberal education.
Senior Capstone Experience
All Monmouth students complete a substantive senior capstone
experience in their major. The shape of this experience depends upon the
discipline: students may complete a research project, thesis, performance,
exhibition, portfolio of work, or senior seminar. The senior capstone is
credit-bearing; it is the culmination of the student's academic study in a major
area of concentration. The capstone experience enables students to showcase
their abilities, explore newly acquired competencies and knowledge, and flex their disciplinary wings in anticipation of graduate or professional study
or entrance into a career.
Monmouth College Science Symposium
Each year, students from chemistry, biochemistry, bio-psychology,
psychology, physics, biology, mathematics and computer science present their
research findings at an all-day, on-campus event to which the public is
invited.
Internships
The Wackerle Career and Leadership Center helps student identify, prepare
for, and apply to internship placements in their fields of interest.
Post-Baccalaureate Fellowship
Monmouth graduates have an opportunity to continue to work with faculty
mentors for a year following commencement under the auspices of the post-bac
fellowship program. Fellows receive free housing on campus and access to
research labs and field stations.

Pre-Health-Service Program
Faculty advisors from chemistry, biology and psychology assist students
with preparation for graduate study in medicine, nursing, physical and
occupational therapy, and medical technology. Monmouth faculty put
integrated study at the center of their approach to pre-health advising and
course work. We offer summer research in medical labs, medical internships,
job shadowing and health-related student-faculty research, and assistance to
students who are preparing for the MCAT.
Pre-law Program
Students interested in law as a profession receive advising support
designed to help them succeed in law school and beyond.
