No matter how academically well-prepared, focused and engaged, everyone
struggles in a class once in a while. No matter how superbly you are
doing in an intense and fascinating course, you'll want to do even
better and sometimes you'll need help finding the way to continue to improve
and to set the bar even higher.
Monmouth’s energetic and ambitious students
benefit from our extensive program of support. We offer a comprehensive array of academic services to guide and enhance
your educational experience, including:
Academic Advising
Monmouth College is known for its strong
academic advising and caring
faculty, as well as for the informal
mentoring faculty and student life staff provide. All of our tenure-track faculty serve as
academic advisors. When you arrive at the College, you’ll be assigned as
advisor the faculty instructor who will teach your Introduction to the
Liberal Arts course (or someone in your area of academic interest), and once you select a major, you’ll
find an advisor in the appropriate department. We make it easy for you to
change advisors and to develop the academic connections and mentoring
relationships that are best for you.
We encourage you to
develop friendships with informal advisors amongst the faculty and student
life staff. You'll quickly find that everyone at Monmouth will care about you as a person and about your experience at
the College.
If you have an interest in engineering, business, law, or the health
services professions, you'll also have access to faculty advisors in our
pre-professional programs as well as the resources and
professional staff of the Wackerle Career and Leadership Center.
The Mellinger Teaching and Learning Center
The
Mellinger Teaching and Learning Center
(MTLC) is staffed by a professional coordinator who works closely with
faculty advisors and a network of peer tutors. The MTLC offers tutoring
support for writing and mathematics, and point-of-need assistance within the
content areas of courses. The MTLC provides one-on-one tutoring
(both drop in and scheduled) and small-group tutoring; it offers regular
workshops on study skills and time management. Supplemental Instruction
courses are organized by the MTLC. You'll also find here assistance in preparing for the GRE, LSAT, MCAT and GMAT tests.
The MTLC is also one of
the places out of which our disabilities services are coordinated (in
conjunction with Student Life). See also the Writing Program page.
You might consider becoming a peer tutor yourself!
Librarians and the Hewes Library
Monmouth’s librarians are always available to assist you in locating
information, sharpening your research skills and evaluating sources. The
spacious, sunny, recently-renovated
Hewes Library includes private study
areas, group work spaces, a coffee shop and patio, two art galleries with
teaching collections, and extensive access to library holdings and
electronic databases both at Monmouth and at other colleges and
universities.
The Wackerle Career and Leadership Center
We’ll help you explore careers, locate and prepare for job-shadowing
opportunities and internships, network with Monmouth alumni, find your first
full-time job, and apply to graduate schools and professional programs.
