Junior Paige Halpin chose Monmouth
College because of the campus and the way that she felt whenever she was
visiting. She's since found that the college has more to offer than just
its beauty and atmosphere. MC allowed Paige to start her educational
studies major earlier than most schools by allowing her the opportunity
to student aid in local school districts her freshman year. She said the
school has been a perfect fit for her, adding "It has been more than I
ever could have asked for!"
Once Paige matriculated at
Monmouth, she was quick to become involved and make herself known around
campus. Though some may say that Paige is a little too involved, she
sees it another way, as involvement is something that she has set her
sights on. If she liked it, she went after it and she did it.
"I think at one point and time I
was able to put myself on 17 different membership lists," she said.
"Crazy, I know."
Some of her favorites include Alpha
Xi Delta, student government and spiritual life. Paige is living proof
that Monmouth College offers a wide array of activities and lets
individuals be involved in a multitude of things. "They should give me a
degree in English and extracurriculars when I graduate!" she joked.
Paige has obviously made a home for
herself at Monmouth. She has settled in easily and found her place, but
why did she go for the small liberal arts college versus looking at the
large universities? Going to a smaller school meant that she would be
able to be involved in music and theater without having to major in
these subjects. A larger university would have required her majoring in
those fields in order to participate. Though she enjoys these subjects,
she wanted to be able to major in English. She has been in choir every
semester and has been in four theater productions. In addition, Paige
felt that since she was a person who did not exactly know what she
wanted to do with her life, a liberal arts education would help because
students take classes in a variety of subjects.
"Some of my favorite classes have
been ones outside my major," she said. "I also have found interests in
subjects that I did not know I had."
An added benefit is that Paige was
able to switch her initial major from education to English with a minor
in history minor and still graduate in four years.
Though Paige loves her
extracurriculars and the liberal arts classroom experiences, her
favorite thing about Monmouth College has been how easy it is to get
know the students, staff and faculty. "I have found many wonderful
friends here, including my professors. I love that I can have a
relationship with them outside the classroom," she said.
Paige found her home at Monmouth
College. Though every student has their own experience here, hers is an
example that represents what Monmouth College can be. Every student
chooses Monmouth for one reason or another. What you make of it while
you are here is what truly matters. MC is a place that lets you
experience college on a variety of levels through its people, the
liberal arts experience and involvement.
