For the ninth consecutive year,
Monmouth College is offering free computerized tax preparation and
e-filing. This is offered through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
(VITA) program, an award winning group made up of accounting majors, advised by Judy Peterson.
The purpose of this service is to
help low- and middle-income taxpayers, generally those who make $40,000
annually or less and cannot afford to pay for a professional tax
preparer. All ages of taxpayers are served from students to retirees.
Professor Judy Peterson,
coordinator of the program for Monmouth College states, "Besides obvious tax
preparation and software skills that the students learn, they also learn
a variety of life skills by interacting with the community members. I am
very proud of all the students that go through this program -- they
learn so much!"
The tax preparation is on a first
come, first serve basis. The service is held at three locations:
Monmouth College, the Warren County Public Library and the Galesburg
Public Library.
