Transfer Student Admission.
Transferring to Monmouth College
Making the decision to transfer colleges takes a lot of thought and consideration. At Monmouth College, we strive to make the transition smooth and efficient.

This guide was prepared to answer some of your specific questions about the transfer process to Monmouth College. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact Kristi Hippen, Associate Dean of Admission, at khippen@monm.edu or 1-800-747-2687.

Application Process
To be considered for admission to Monmouth College, submit the following to the Office of Admission:

  • A completed application for admission, available online
  • Official transcripts from all colleges previously attended
  • High school transcripts and ACT scores, if available

A cumulative grade point average of 2.5 is strongly recommended for admission to Monmouth College.

Students should note that only their college credit will transfer to Monmouth College, not their GPA. Therefore, your GPA at Monmouth will reflect only the course work completed at Monmouth College.

Transfer Credit
Monmouth College will accept a maximum of 62 credits from outside academic institutions. Students obtaining at least 59 semester hours will transfer at junior status. Only those classes in which you receive a C- or better will transfer to Monmouth College. Most classes from accredited institutions will transfer, as determined by our registrar. For specific questions about the transfer of courses, please consult Kristi Hippen, Associate Dean of Admission, at khippen@monm.edu or 1-800-747-2687.

We have included listings for accepted courses from:

Prospective transfer students are encouraged to meet with a professor in the department they wish to major. This gives the student and the professor the opportunity to identify courses that may be applied towards the major and determine the projected time to complete a degree at Monmouth.

Financial Aid / Scholarships
Monmouth College uses an aggressive approach to financial aid to enable students to continue their
education at Monmouth at a very affordable price. Through the Monmouth Plan and state grant assistance, transfer students may be eligible to receive at least $5500 to $9000 in grant assistance. This excludes families with a 2001 adjusted gross income in excess of $250,000. This financial aid plan is tiered for transfer students. Please consult with the Director Of Admission for more specific information regarding your status.

To apply for financial aid, students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) that is available in your college financial aid or counseling office or on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students who have filed the FAFSA in past years can expect to receive a renewal form that should be updated and returned to the Department of Education instead of submitting a brand new FAFSA. Please be sure to add Monmouth’s Title IV code, 001725, to your FAFSA application to ensure that we receive your results.

Additional Financial Aid information for Illinois residents is also available online, through the Illinois Student Assistance Commission: http://www.isac1.org.

Scholarship Opportunities for Transfers

  • Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships in the amount of $1250, renewable each year, are offered to students who have been active members of PTK at their community college, and who have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Transfer Merit Scholarships in the amount of $1250, renewable each year, are offered to transfer students who have maintained a cumulative 3.0 GPA in college, received a 25 or better on the ACT, and who ranked in the upper 25% of their graduating high school class.
  • Fine Arts Scholarships are available to students who excel in vocal and instrumental music, theatre, and visual art. Performance competitions for these scholarships are held in February of each year. Students do not need to be a major in these areas to receive a scholarship.

Students are eligible to receive either an academic or talent scholarship. No additional applications are necessary.

Transfers From Other Institutions
Students who wish to transfer to Monmouth College must submit all previous college transcripts and should meet with the transfer coordinator to discuss the application process. The Registrar will complete a transcript analysis to determine the academic status of the transfer student. Any course taken at another accredited institution is transferred provided that a grade of C- or higher was earned and that the course is acceptable at Monmouth College. Grades of transferred courses are not included in calculating grade-point averages. No student will be allowed to exceed 62 total transfer credits.

The Dean of Admission admits qualified transfer students who seek to matriculate at Monmouth College (see Admission Section of Catalog). Prior to paying the enrollment deposit and registering for classes, transfer students, with assistance from the transfer coordinator, should meet with a professor in the department in which they wish to major. During this visit, the faculty member will identify which transfer courses count toward the major and determine the number of remaining courses required in the major. Finally, working together, the student and faculty member will design the graduation plan. This visit is essential in that it provides transfer students an opportunity to find out more about their fields of study and to estimate the projected time it will take to complete a degree at Monmouth College.

Transfer of Credit for Current Students
For students enrolled at Monmouth College, the written approval of the registrar and the advisor is required in advance if courses are to be taken at another institution for transfer credit. (Click here for form.)  No more than 31 transfer credits will be allowed after matriculation (However, see senior year residency requirement under "Requirements for the Degree" in the Catalog). No student will be allowed to exceed 62 total transfer credits. The transfer of credits is not complete until the Registrar receives an official transcript from the institution at which the work was taken. Work that is being transferred is not considered in determining a student’s academic status until the transcript is received.

Associate Degree Transfers
The registrar determines which transferred courses satisfy the degree requirements of Monmouth College. A community college graduate who has been admitted to Monmouth College with the Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree may be admitted with junior standing (that is, with a maximum of 62 semester hours of transfer credit).
