Work zone: Campus receiving facelifts at several sites this summer

A pair of two-year projects that are in their first phase lead the list of building and grounds improvements at Monmouth College this summer.

Although construction at the football field and the Admission & College Relations Building will not be completed until 2009, the renovations already completed will give both sites new looks heading the 2008-09 academic year.

The newly-named April Zorn Memorial Stadium will be ready for play when the Fighting Scots open their home gridiron season on Sept. 13 against Lawrence University. The playing surface of Bobby Woll Memorial Field will remain natural grass until next year, when synthetic turf will be installed. Everything around the field is being changed this summer, most notably on the east side, where the bleachers and press box are being replaced. The hill on that side is also being terraced to allow for additional seating.

“It will feel much more like a football stadium than it has in the past,” said vice president for business and finance Don Gladfelter, who reported that work there was progressing as scheduled.

Permanent seating is being added on the west side as well to better accommodate visiting fans.

Many visitors to Monmouth College make their first stop at the Office of Admission, located in a near-century-old structure on the campus’ southwest corner. While the outside of the Tudor-style home will retain its stately appearance, almost everything on the inside will be changed, either this summer or next.

The Office of Development and College Relations staff also works in this building. “I think one of the interesting things is that we’re trying to do the remodeling while people are still in the building,” said Gladfelter.

A handful of the building’s two dozen staff members have temporarily moved next door to the former Sigma Phi Epsilon house. When they return in early August, they will see an entirely new lower level.

Renovations to the main floor of the building actually began during the spring, and Gladfelter said the project will be completed in 2009 when the Development and College Relations offices on the second floor are renovated.

Another area receiving a facelift is the quad between Hewes Library, the Stockdale Center and the Huff Athletic Center. New sidewalks have been added, said Gladfelter, as well as small plazas with benches.

“These changes were made with the money the college received from the April Huff memorial,” he explained. “The quad area will be much nicer.”

An important improvement, said Gladfelter, is the installation of a campus announcement system for security purposes. The system will allow the college to immediately issue alerts or similar types of announcements that need to be heard quickly by the entire campus.

In fact, said Gladfelter, most of the recent construction has had purposes other than campus beautification.

“A lot of our focus this summer has been related to energy efficiency, safety and security – even the football field,” he said. “The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) is a big part of what we’re doing. When students return in August, they’re going to see a more user-friendly campus.”

Other improvements include:

• A new $35,000 kiln, complete with adequate ventilation, in the art department, which also received an additional office.

• Two new offices on the upper level of McMichael Academic Hall, as well an extensive renovation of the Poling Room on that level.

• New landscaping around Bowers Hall.

• New restroom facilities in Austin Hall.

• A renovation of the Private Dining Room in the Stockdale Center.

• Boiler work in six buildings, including four residence halls.

• A new roof on the Weeks House.

• Several audiovisual and technology updates around campus.

• A new educational studies office on the third floor of Wallace Hall.

• A new kitchen area in the International House.

“Many of our improvements support improved teaching and learning,” said Jane Jakoubek, vice president for academic affairs. “The top priority was putting technology into classrooms used by our Introduction to Liberal Arts classes. We are making good headway on this goal and will continue to move forward in future years.”
