Students attend
chemistry symposium: Even though their research advisers were unable
to accompany them, three senior chemistry majors attended the
Undergraduate Research Symposium at the University of Illinois in April.
An oral presentation by chemistry/bio-chemistry double major Antonella
Magnelli of Mount Prospect particularly impressed the symposium judges,
taking home first-place honors. Also making an oral presentation was
chemistry major Katie King of Canton. King’s time at the symposium also
included a poster presentation, and chemistry/bio-chemistry Jennifer
Hass of Pittsfield also presented a poster. All three students will be
attending graduate schools for chemistry in the fall. Magnelli will be
at Northeastern University, King at Kent State University and Hass at
Indiana University.

Marianne Siess |
Siess hired in development office: Marianne Siess has been hired
as a development research officer, starting her new MC position on May
21. She worked the previous five years in alumni and development
research and records at St. Ambrose University. In May, Siess received a
master’s degree in library and information studies from the University
of Wisconsin, where her coursework focused on research strategies and
information analysis. She is a 2000 magna cum laude graduate of
Augustana College in Rock Island.
Video team captures MC images: It’s unclear if any of the footage
that was shot will turn MC faculty and students into celebrities, but a
video team collected plenty of great campus images on two trips to
Monmouth in May. The video was collected to produce a piece promoting
the college’s new center for integrated studies, which received official
approval from the board of trustees at their last meeting. The team
conducted interviews with science and business faculty and students on
their first visit, then returned for commencement to interview trustees
and capture the day’s events on video. James Godde, chair of the biology
department, ended his videotaped exam review with a Mary Catherine
Gallagher-esque “Superstar!” flourish – a moment, unfortunately, that
might wind up on the cutting room floor.
Faculty promoted: At its regular meeting in May, the Monmouth
College Board of Trustees approved the promotion of three faculty
members to full professors – Marjorie Bond in mathematics, Ken McMillan
in political economy and commerce and Judy Peterson in accounting. Tenure
was awarded to Marlo Belschner in the English department. She was
promoted from assistant to associate professor.
