College welcomes 425
first-time students:
With its enrollment figure for the 2008-09 academic year confirmed,
Monmouth College experienced another strong admission year and is
already looking ahead to greater success, according to dean of
admission Christine Johnston. The college welcomed 425 first-time
students in August, including 383 first-time freshmen, which puts
the school’s overall enrollment at 1,328 students. Monmouth hopes to
gradually build on that total in the next few years, eventually
capping enrollment at approximately 1,500. Johnston is optimistic
that the goal can be achieved. “This next year, we’re going to make
a real push for out-of-state students,” she said. “We’ve got a
couple of exciting initiatives we’re going to get off the ground in
the months ahead.”

Scots swimmers to
get new coach:
Monmouth College will begin a nationwide search for a new
swimming coach following the decision by two-time Midwest Conference
Men’s Coach of the Year Keith Crawford to accept a similar position
at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Crawford recently announced his decision to
leave Monmouth for the Terre Haute, Ind., school citing the
opportunity to move closer to his family in Indiana. Crawford was
hired in 2004 to resurrect the men’s swimming program after a
20-year layoff and establish a women’s swimming program at Monmouth.
Under his direction, the Fighting Scots quickly developed into a
contender in the MWC. The men placed second in the conference meet
the last two years and the women steadily improved, finishing as
high as fourth place in the conference in 2007. Longtime assistant
Dave Yez, a 1964 Monmouth College graduate, has been named the
interim head coach.
