College welcomes 425 first-time students:
With its enrollment figure for the 2008-09 academic year confirmed, Monmouth College experienced another strong admission year and is already looking ahead to greater success, according to dean of admission Christine Johnston. The college welcomed 425 first-time students in August, including 383 first-time freshmen, which puts the school’s overall enrollment at 1,328 students. Monmouth hopes to gradually build on that total in the next few years, eventually capping enrollment at approximately 1,500. Johnston is optimistic that the goal can be achieved. “This next year, we’re going to make a real push for out-of-state students,” she said. “We’ve got a couple of exciting initiatives we’re going to get off the ground in the months ahead.”

… Which brings us to:
Patrick Lupton of Lake Forest, Ill., has joined the staff at Monmouth College in the new position of regional director of admission. Lupton has a strong background in higher education, having worked at Ellis College, Lake Forest College and Kendall College. At the latter two schools, he worked in admission-related positions. He comes to the MC position from Kendall, a top-rated college for culinary arts, hotel and hospitality management, business and education in downtown Chicago. Lupton will be charged with increasing MC’s out-of-state enrollment, in particular the states bordering Illinois and areas of the Southeast and Southwest. He will also help develop and support networks of alumni for referring and identifying potential prospective students for Monmouth.

Steven Skinner to give Whiteman Lecture:
Microsoft executive Steven Skinner will deliver the Wendell Whiteman Memorial Lecture on Oct. 16 at 11 a.m. in Monmouth College’s Dahl Chapel and Auditorium. Free and open to the public, the lecture annually brings a noted business executive or scholar to the college campus. The title of Skinner’s talk is “Ten Keys to a Successful Career in Business.” The general manager for worldwide industry strategy and solutions for Microsoft Corp. in its Sales, Marketing and Services Group, Skinner is a strategic thinker, known for his world-class skills in multi-channel retail strategy, shareholder value analysis and global supply chain management. A 1980 graduate of Monmouth High School, Skinner earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from the United States Naval Academy and an MBA from the University of Chicago’s Graduate School of Business.

Scots swimmers to get new coach:
Monmouth College will begin a nationwide search for a new swimming coach following the decision by two-time Midwest Conference Men’s Coach of the Year Keith Crawford to accept a similar position at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Crawford recently announced his decision to leave Monmouth for the Terre Haute, Ind., school citing the opportunity to move closer to his family in Indiana. Crawford was hired in 2004 to resurrect the men’s swimming program after a 20-year layoff and establish a women’s swimming program at Monmouth. Under his direction, the Fighting Scots quickly developed into a contender in the MWC. The men placed second in the conference meet the last two years and the women steadily improved, finishing as high as fourth place in the conference in 2007. Longtime assistant Dave Yez, a 1964 Monmouth College graduate, has been named the interim head coach.
