Much talk has been
made this year of the 100-year World Series title drought for the
Chicago Cubs. As the Northsiders continue to roll along with the best
record in Major League Baseball, few fans can remember a time when the
Cubs were this good.
Of course, the number of people who can say they actually “remember” the
Cubs’ last world championship has to be a much, much smaller number.
That’s because few people today were even alive on Oct. 14, 1908, when
the Cubs finished off a World Series-clinching 2-0 victory over the
Detroit Tigers.
The two members of Monmouth College’s family below likely don’t recall
that game against Ty Cobb and Co., but they had at least been born.
If any of our readers know of any alumni who should be added to the list
or who will be joining “the century club” anytime soon, please send an
e-mail to alumni@monm.edu.
Mary Smith Johnson
’30 lives in Monmouth, just a few blocks from the east side of campus.
She celebrated her 100th birthday on May 31, which happened to coincide
with the college’s Alumni Weekend.
Sara Keister Whiteman
of Long Beach, Calif., was not an MC student, but she has several ties
to Monmouth College. In honor of her 100th birthday on March 27, 2008,
her family and friends established a scholarship in honor of her and her
late husband,
Robert Henry Whiteman
’28. The couple’s daughter,
Barbara Joyce Whiteman Garland,
graduated from MC in 1949.
