MC’s proud of Peacock:
Safford Peacock, an emeritus trustee of Monmouth College, was awarded
the Defense Distinguished Service Medal in June in Washington, D.C.
Created in 1970, the medal is awarded by the Secretary of Defense for
exceptionally distinguished performance of duty contributing to national
security or defense at the highest levels while assigned to a joint
activity. It is the highest award that the United States military
presents to a civilian. Peacock, who joined MC’s board of trustees in
1979 and was its chairman from 1984 to 1991, was recognized primarily
for his work with the National Defense University (NDU) Foundation,
where he served from 1995 to 2007, including five years as chairman of
the board.
Campus security goes 24/7:
Starting this year, Monmouth College has made substantial changes in its
safety and security program. “We are pleased to announce round-the-clock
security coverage,” said Mohsin Masood, associate dean of students and
director of residence life. “Security officers are now available 24
hours a day, seven days a week.” The campus community can now also learn
of emergency situations through a campus-wide public broadcasting system
and through an additional system that will alert students, faculty and
staff via their cell phones and college e-mail accounts. A new SUV,
complete with appropriate security equipment, has been purchased by the
college for its security officers and has already become a regular sight
on campus. Students can also use a security escort service around the
clock to travel between campus locations, including college-owned
parking lots.
Michael Phelps’ personal calorie provider:
Well, it’s a little unclear if MC chef Kim Fornero actually prepared a
meal that eight-time Olympic gold medal-winner Michael Phelps consumed
in Beijing as part of his 12,000-calorie-per-day diet. But thanks to his
employer, Aramark Corp., Fornero was again part of the company’s staff
at the Summer Olympic Games. He just completed supervising meal
preparations for thousands of athletes, officials, media, coaches and
others in the Olympic Village, and he also worked at the 2004 Olympics
in Athens, Greece. In the athletes’ village alone, the food service
staff prepared meals for 15,000 athletes and 1,300 staff, for a total of
nearly 50,000 meals per day for the three-week event.
McMillan named new Pattee chair:
Monmouth College president Mauri Ditzler has announced that professor
Ken McMillan will hold the Frederick H. Pattee Chair in Political
Economy and Commerce. Promoted to full professor last spring, McMillan,
who is in his second teaching stint at Monmouth, rejoined the faculty in
1999 after having taught business and economics from 1989 to 1994. For
four of those five years, he was voted the college’s Most Outstanding
Teacher. Prior to coming to Monmouth in 1989, McMillan was active in
government and politics. He served as the chief speechwriter for
Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz in 1973-74. From 1977 to 1983, he was
a Republican state senator in Illinois. McMillan was the founding
president of the Illinois Agricultural Leadership Foundation and has
served on its board for 25 years. Between his stints on the Monmouth
faculty, he was the corporate secretary for Country Companies Insurance
and executive director of information for the Illinois Farm Bureau.
