Through the years, alumni
have stayed in contact with their alma mater in different ways. Annual
mailings and class newsletters have been longstanding traditions in
higher education, and student callers have also helped spread the news
about an institution. Since computers have become popular, alumni can
visit their alma mater’s Web site, and they might receive semi-regular
e-mails, such as this “Alumni Pipeline.”
The next stage in the
development of alumni/alma mater communication is popular networking
sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn, and Monmouth College now has a
presence on both.
“The Monmouth College Fan
Page on Facebook is a way for alumni to learn about upcoming events, to
see photos of past events and to even submit and post photos of their
own,” said Lucy Thompson ’99, the college’s director of alumni programs.
The fan page currently has 548
fans, and the number is rapidly growing.
While Facebook provides a
way to network socially, MC’s presence on LinkedIn is intended to help
alumni and friends network professionally. The “Monmouth College Alumni
Group” page has been established and is “a little behind” the Facebook
site in its development, according to Thompson. There are currently 193
people registered.
“We encourage alumni to
look into both sites and begin connecting and chatting with fellow
alumni and friends,” she said. To join, click on either logo above.
