September 22, 2006It
has been 15 years since most of us have stepped back onto the Monmouth
College campus. The reasons why are apparent in some cases, and personal
in others. We can all say that Monmouth College had provided us with a
canvas on which we painted our futures. Moreover, our lives have been
enriched by the faculty, staff and students at that time. Our campus was
one where lessons were taught, but also lessons were learned. Diversity
amongst the student population was the main focus during our time at
Monmouth College. We were a group of intermingling cultures, contrasting
socioeconomic backgrounds and different ethnicities, learning about one
another; trying to understand what made us different, but, at the same
time, investigating those things that made us the same.
Five years ago, an
event occurred that has changed the face of our nation. It made us feel
a sense vulnerability, but at the same time, made us aware that we could
come together in times of need. Even more recent, with the two highly
publicized natural disasters to hit the US, we were needed once again to
come together as a nation to lend a hand to those in need.
So what does this
have to do with the class of 1991? Probably nothing, or maybe it’s a
message to put to rest those things that prevent us from achieving the
greater joys in life. And maybe that may mean a visit back to Monmouth
College.
