Ivory Quinby Leads Community in Strong Support of Monmouth College
April 1, 1856

Ivory Quinby
Although a Baptist by faith, Ivory Quinby is one of Monmouth College's strongest supporters.

A native of Maine, Quinby emigrated to Quincy, Ill., as a young man, and shortly thereafter traveled upriver by steamboat to Oquawka with his law partner, John Mitchell. With only $125 to his name, he traveled on foot to Monmouth, a distance of 17 miles, where he established his home.

With another partner, Mr. Quinby established one of the first banks in Warren County. He has also worked in the mercantile business and is currently a respected Judge of Warren County. In 1852, he helped plan and finance the railroad to Burlington and the following year he lent his financial and moral support to Monmouth College, for which he was named trustee and treasurer.
