Monmouth College Admits Women on Equal Basis as Men
April 1, 1856

The Monmouth College catalog proudly proclaims that women will be admitted "on an equal footing with men." The regulation that ladies and gentlemen are admitted to all the privileges of the college means that course requirements are identical for both sexes. Men and women enrolled in the Scientific Course are both required to learn surveying. This skill is considered important for our largely agrarian society.

The core courses of study are the Bible and related topics such as natural theology, evidences of Christianity, moral philosophy, and the principles of the Gospel. It should be noted that while the management of the College is denominational, all students of all evangelical faiths are welcome.
