Acropolis

The acropolis is the pinnacle draw of Athens and is visited by thousands of tourists every year. In many ways it symbolizes Greece as it houses some of the most famous structures in the Hellenistic world. Among these are the Parthenon and the Porch of Caryatids. The Parthenon is considered one of the most beautiful works of architecture ever created.

There is an eternal quality about being on the acropolis overlooking the ancient city of Athens. The timeless quality comes from the feeling that the grandeur of the entire place would give anyone a sense of awe regardless of who they are, where they are from, or what age they live in. Consider the impact Greeks had on western thought, art, architecture, and philosophy. Being at the Acropolis, not reading about it or seeing pictures, actually being there can offer a glimpse into how and why this civilization was so influential. Anyone who could produce something like this during the time it was made was more than ordinary.

Unfortunately, some did not value the Ancients works in the Acropolis as much as I do. In 1684 during a power struggle over the Aegean between the Turks and the Venetians the Parthenon, which housed Turkish munitions, was blown up by Venetian cannon shot, destroying the structure and killing 300 people. With ever-growing tensions in today's world, and the availability of nuclear arms, whether or not my grandkids...or kids, will be able to ever see the Acropolis is questionable.
