Olympia

The Olympics in ancient times were of very special importance to the Greeks, even holding religious significance. Winners of the various games were elevated to nearly god-like status and were much revered. The influence of the Olympic games is seen today, two thousand years later, when we can see nations of the world compete every four years in the Olympics. Today athletes represent their respective country; in the past athletes represented a city state, such as Athens or Sparta. Core values of the Olympic games, national pride and athletic competition, are still the basis for the games today, as they have since ancient times.

We had the opportunity to participate in our own version of the games while in Olympia. We ran a sprint on the ancient track. The circular gate was what the athletes passed through entering the race track.

Workshop of Pheidias

Pheidias established the canon of proportions, which was the basis for how to realistically sculpt human figures. He was also head of the religious sculpture design for the Parthenon. What is thought to be his workshop has been transformed into a Roman church.

Nike of Paconis

The combination of effective use of drapery and pose of the body gives a strong sense of movement.

Hermes Holding Baby Dionysis

by Praxiteles

This is possibly an original. A personal favorite. The expressions each displays and how the two play off one another is truly beautiful.
