![]() Writing Center--Philosophy and FAQ's Monmouth College Writing Center Philosophy The Monmouth College Writing Center peer tutors, who come from majors across the campus, work with writers at any stage of their writing processes, from planning to drafting to revising to editing. The focus of the session depends on the individual student's needs and goals. The Monmouth College Writing Center strives to develop better writers and not just better individual papers. With this in mind, the peer tutors work interactively with the writers, offering friendly support and helping them to develop and improve their overall writing skills.
Frequently Asked Questions Do I need to schedule an appointment? No. An appointment is not necessary. We work with writers on a first-come, first-served basis. Is there a fee to use the Writing Center? No. The Writing Center is free for Monmouth College students. As an added bonus, unlike some schools, we don't limit the number of visits that you can make during a week. Where is the Writing Center? We're located on the third floor of the Mellinger Learning Center, between Graham Hall and Fulton Hall and just up the hill from the HT Science Center. How long does a session last? Writing sessions generally last about 30 minutes. However, If you have just a quick question, you might stay only 10 minutes; or, if you want to look at revising an entire essay, the session might be closer to an hour. We try to tailor the length session to your own needs and goals. We'll always invite you back to the writing center, too, for follow up visits. Who are the tutors? The tutors are trained undergraduates from a variety of different majors, from English to Biology to Political Science. They are writers themselves, so they understand what goes into a college writing assignment. What should I expect during a tutoring session? Tutors work with writers at all stages of their writing processes, from planning to drafting to revising to editing. The focus of your session depends on your needs and goals—and on where you are with the assignment. Expect the tutor to ask a lot of questions, to better understand your writing and to keep you involved in the session. What do I need to bring to my session? Bring your assignment sheet and any notes related to the writing assignment—this will help you and the peer tutors to make more effective revisions. If you have not begun writing, bring your ideas. My writing is not for an English class. Can a tutor still help? Yes. Tutors can help students with writing for any kind of class. Bringing the assignment sheet and any supporting materials will help familiarize the tutor with the conventions of your particular discipline. Does the Writing Center help with grammar? Yes. We are not a proofreading service, though, so you won't be dropping off a paper and picking up a corrected version an hour later. Rather, the tutors will help you to both identify grammar concerns in your writing and make effective corrections. |
