Writing Partners

Writing Partners:
A Collaboration between ILA and
the Writing Center
General Overview
This fall, CAC
and the writing center will offer to ILA a Writing Partners program. The Writing Partners program ideally will be one component
in the communication-rich ILA classroom—students will also get
feedback from faculty (on drafts and final evaluation) and peers
(during peer critiques).
A complete description of the Writing Partners Pilot
is available here.
General Plan
 |
The Paired
Instructor and Writing Partner will meet at the beginning of the
semester to discuss the syllabus and schedule for the two writing
assignments.
|
 |
After each
writing assignment is introduced in the ILA section, the Writing
Partner will post times that he/she is available to meet with the
ILA students.
|
 |
Writing
Partners will take the role of “interested reader” during the
tutoring sessions, using the assignment guidelines and ILA
objectives as the foundation for the discussion.
|
 |
In addition to
meeting with the Paired Instructors, Writing Partners will meet
twice during the semester with Steve Price, the Writing Center
Director, for ongoing staff development and to address any questions
the Writing Partners might have.
|
 |
To improve the
effectiveness of the tutoring session and the overall Writing
Partners program, a series of brief assessment tools will be used
during the semester. |
Benefits of
Writing Partners
 |
The Writing
Partner can “test drive” each writing assignment, offering the
Paired Instructor feedback and helping to identify questions the ILA
students might have.
|
 |
The Paired
Instructors ultimately maintain more control over the writing
assignments: pedagogical aims and writing objectives are reiterated
to students by the Writing Partners; variables are minimized, since
the Paired Instructors have more direct contact with the Writing
Partners than they would with a traditional writing center tutor;
and the Paired Instructors learn more about their students’
struggles and successes with the assignment, from feedback from the
Writing Partners.
|
 |
Participation
in the Writing Partners program accentuates the writing, speaking,
and critical thinking goals of ILA.
|
 |
The tutoring
sessions help to model strategies used by effective writers.
|
 |
The tutoring
sessions provide students with an outside reader and thus a broader
audience for their writing.
|
 |
The tutoring
sessions promote active student involvement.
