
Commencement Ceremony
Monmouth College’s one hundred and forty-fifth
commencement ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 12. Prior to the processional at 11:30am,
the Pipes and Drums will perform on Wallace Lawn. Seating will begin at 9:30am. Tickets are
required. Each graduate will receive 6 tickets. Requests for ceremony tickets must be made
through the Stockdale Center Office at 309-457-2345. Special Needs seating is available.
In the event of heavy rain, lightening or other hazardous
conditions, the start of the Commencement ceremony will be delayed until the weather clears.
If the weather does not show signs of clearing, the ceremony will be moved to the Glennie
Gymnasium.
Baccalaureate Service
The Baccalaureate Service will be held in the
Monmouth College Auditorium on Saturday, May 11 at 2:00pm. Doors will open at 12:30pm.
Graduates are asked to report at 1:30pm for line up. While seating may be limited, all family
members and guests are invited to participate. Questions about the service may be directed to
Rev. B. Kathleen Fannin at 309-457-2380.
Speaker
Dr.
Stanley E. Chism, co-founder of The Cancer Care Institute in San Jose, Calif., and a
1963 Monmouth graduate, will be the featured speaker.
Chism, who recently retired as the medical director of
radiation oncology at the Institute, received Monmouth’s Young Alumnus Award in 1973 and its
Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1999. Before co-founding The Cancer Care Institute, Chism’s
career path in medicine took him to New England and Australia, as well as several locations in
California.
Chism came to Monmouth from Newton, Iowa, and was involved in
numerous campus activities, including Blue Key and Tau Kappa Epsilon. He was elected the
Outstanding Freshman Man, president of the sophomore class and TKE president. Chism earned his
medical degree from the University of Iowa in 1967.
President’s Reception
President and Mrs. Giese host a reception for all graduates, members of their families and
guests on the Quinby House Lawn, Saturday, May 11 from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Refreshments will be
available. Guests are welcome to tour the first floor of Quinby.
Senior Sendoff
The Senior Sendoff, hosted by the Alumni Association will be held at the VFW Post 2301, 830 N.
G Street. All graduates, their family members and guests are welcome to attend this casual get
together. Refreshments will be available.
Parking
Parking will be available on a first come first serve basis in all parking lots on campus.
Additional parking is available on the city streets adjacent to campus following all parking
regulations and street signs. Ninth Street will be
accessible for public parking Sunday, May 12, 2002 only.
Special Needs
Arrangements for visitors and guests with special needs, such as handicap accessible seating,
may be made in advance by contacting the Dian Henson in the Stockdale Student Center office at
309.457-2345 or by email at
stockdale@monm.edu. Guests seated in the Special Needs section may be
accompanied by one other person and will be issued tickets granting them access to the Special
Needs section. These requests should be made by May 1, 2002.

Order forms for class photos, as well as for individual
photos of students receiving diplomas and videotapes of the Commencement exercises, will be
available throughout Commencement weekend. Advanced orders may be made by contact the Office
of College Relations at 309-457-2314. Due to audience considerations, the opportunity for
personal, close-up photography and videotaping will be limited.
