The women’s tennis team is off to a great start this school year with their overall rankings at 5-4. They have already met their wins from the 2006 season, when they ended their season with a 5-5 record.

They are hoping very much for a winning season this year, which has not yet been seen by the team. Cassie Frantz, a junior and member of the team, had much to say about this year’s team. “The team is really young. We have no seniors this year, so we are really looking forward to the team being even better next year and in the years that follow.” They are confident that this could be a successful season.

Frantz also spoke of the team’s goals and their hopes for the season: “We always start off the season with the goal of making it into the team championships.”

As Frantz indicated, this was their hope and goal at the beginning of the 2007 season. Though it is certainly not decided yet, they do not know if they will meet that goal this year.

Regardless, it is obvious that the Scots have improved much just by looking at their stats from the past few years. They will be happy with this season just for this reason.

The team is very young, with four freshmen, three of whom are in the top six of the team, three sophomores and three juniors. This only gives the Scots a great chance to grow and improve in the coming years.

Monmouth is led by Coach Kerry Frantz, Cassie’s father. This is his second consecutive season with the team. Cassie attributes a lot of the team’s improvement to the consistency of having the same coach for more than one season. Coach Frantz is the first coach to accomplish this since Monmouth’s women’s tennis program was revived in 2002. Since its resurrection, the Scots have had difficulties holding on to its coaches, going through four coaches up to this point.

Monmouth has high hopes for themselves for the rest of the season. In looking at the teams they are facing in the near future, they feel it would be easy to end this season on a good note.

The Scots received a great honor this year by being invited to participate in the Western Illinois University Women’s Tennis Invitational, on Oct. 5 and 6. “There are many very good teams that will be attending the invitational, a lot of Division I and II teams.” This will be a great experience for the team, one that will hopefully be fruitful for them.

The Scots have several matches left in the season with the next home matches being this weekend. They will have a double match Saturday, Sept. 29, playing against Carroll College and Clarke College.
