The Monmouth Fighting Scots, during the past two weeks, have played against a lot of tough teams. The outcome of these five matches has pushed Monmouth down in the standings but the playoffs are right around the corner.

On Tues. Oct. 11, the Fighting Scots played at home versus Cornell College. The game ended a 0-0 draw and both teams had to go into double overtime. “We played a well-played game”, said Fighting Scots’ coach Rue Carthew. “We could have played with a better performance and actually turn the game around into a win. We had many chances to do so.”

The Scots played another tough match on Sat. Oct. 15, versus Beloit College at home. The final score of the game was a 3-3 tie. Both teams went into double overtime but no one was able to put the game away.

In the 43rd minute, Scots’ center midfielder Paul Kallal had a breakaway chance to win the game. Kallal shot the ball from outside the 18 yard box and it hit the upper crossbar and went out of bounds. Player of the match was awarded to Monmouth goalkeeper Brad Hoffman for his 13 key saves that he had during the game.

The next day on Sun. Oct. 16, the Fighting Scots played home against Lake Forest College. The Scots were out played by Lake Forest’s excellent attack, such as soccer star Atilla Schmidt. Schmidt is the star forward and scored two goals within 13 minutes for Lake Forest leaving them the victors of the match with a final score of 2-0.

On Sat. Oct. 22, the Scots played a very depressing game versus Saint Norbert College. The Scots played at home with an overall attendance level of 300 people watching the game.

In the fifth minute of play, the Scots scored an own goal. It was only to go even more down hill from there.

After that, Saint Norbert scored five goals within a 23 minute time span leaving the final score 6-0 for Saint Norbert.

“This loss has to have probably been the worst for us,” said Monmouth goalkeeper Brad Hoffman. “Even though we played a bad game, we are still going to do pretty well in the upcoming playoffs.”

On Sunday, Oct 23, the Monmouth Fighting Scots played at home against Saint Lawrence College. The game ended with the score 3-1 in favor of Saint Lawrence. In the 29th minute of play, Monmouth’s center forward Matt Mrowiec scored making the Scots on top. But, only three minutes after that, Saint Lawrence had scored two goals making them the new leaders of the match. The final score of the game was 3-1 for Saint Lawrence.

Meanwhile, on Wed. Oct. 26, the Fighting Scots will be playing against Illinois College at Jacksonville, Illinois. The game is at 4 o’clock pm and the Fighting Scots are expected to win.

The Scots have just two more games until the playoffs. Whether they win the last two games or not, the Scots will be heading straight for the playoffs and are known to play good soccer.
