Put a mixture of sophomore through senior men and women together in one residential hall and you will see the problems that residents in Bowers Hall are facing.

Residential staff for Bowers Hall said during the 2004-2005 school year, there was a huge problem with students vandalizing the hall.

At the end of the school year, students had broken the elevator, which caused a huge fine for some students in order for the elevator to be fixed.

This year’s residential staff said much of vandalism was due to there being many parties during the first weekend back.

In addition, the fire extinguisher from the first floor of Bowers Hall was stolen and later found in the bushes of Stockdale.

After last year, the residential staff of Bowers Hall wants to make sure there is not a repeat of what happened last year.

Residential Assistant Kathleen Koelbl said, “Our goal is not to make Bowers feel like a prison, we want everyone to have a good living environment, and not steal things just because.”

Head Resident Stephanie Kennedy said, “We are not trying to be police, we are trying to make the hall a safe place to live for everyone.”

Kennedy said the staff of Bowers Hall is enforcing the rules strongly this year so that what happened last year will not happen again.

Students said they love living in Bowers Hall, but they feel something is always wrong with Bowers and that since the rules are more enforced now they feel restricted.

Another big concern was fining all of the students for damages that only a few students had done.

Junior Ashley Scharpen-ter said, “There has to be a different system then fining everyone in Bowers for someone else’s stupid act and unfortunately the people who caused us to be on lock down might not even live in bowers.”

Kennedy said no one is being fined at this point for any damages.

Koelbl added the elevator was only shut off for one day due to accessibly, some students need the elevator.

Currently, students living in Bowers are on lock down and Bowers Hall staff will be meeting Sunday to discuss to discuss when students will be let off lockdown.
