The women’s Cross Country team continued their season at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational on Oct. 1. As a team, the women finished 25 out of 27 teams.
The race was held on a tight course with a lot of curves along the Lake Michigan front. The 27 team field was compiled of a mixture of Division II and III teams as well as NAIA schools. Individually, Val Daves and Erin Mann were top finishers for the MC team. Both Daves and Mann were able to better their times of last years race on the same course. Daves’ time of 21:17 and Mann’s time of 21:56 were their best times of this year.
Head Coach Roger Haynes said, “Although we are missing a true number one runner that we can count on finishing in the top ten every race; we have done well. We continue to improve our times and are on pace to begin to challenge the Midwest Conference.”
Although as a team the Scots have struggled, the future seems to be very bright. Mann is the lone senior on the squad and two of the top three runners are freshman.
Also, MC has four girls running times putting themselves in contention for All-Conference honors. Daves, Mann, Kila Cox, and Kaile Schreiner are the Scots runners that will be challenging those spots down the stretch of the season. To earn All-Conference honors the runners must be in the top 20 times all season for the conference. Currently Daves is 17 and Schreiner is 20. Mann and Cox are 28 and 29 respectively.
Monmouth will continue their season Saturday Oct. 8 at the Wartburg Invitational in Waverly, IA.
