Brandon’s B.O. (Box Office)

Now Playing

“Zathura” - Sony is betting that this family-friendly follow-up to “Jumanji” will take the number one box office spot this weekend. However, without a comedic presence like Robin Williams to make things more interesting for an older audience, the popularity of this flick will likely be relegated to the “tween” and under crowd.

“Derailed” - Clive Owen and Jennifer Aniston star in this intriguing-looking thriller in which a steamy affair has dire consequences. The film marks the first mainstream release from the Miramax-divorced Weinstein Brothers as well.

“Get Rich or Die Tryin” - 50 Cent pulls an Eminem and stars in his own biopic with a high profile director (in this case, Jim Sheridan of “In America” fame). And like “8 Mile,” the film is getting high marks from critics. Whether it has a good box office ranking remains to be seen, however.

On DVD

“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” - Johnny Depp stars as tortured candy manufacturer Willy Wonka in Tim Burton’s colorful (and surprisingly good) nonmusical remake of a personal childhood favorite. Depp may not erase nostalgic memories of Gene Wilder, but he makes the role his own. Definitely worth checking out in spite of the disappointing Oompa Loopas.

“Christmas with the Kranks” - Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis make the Schwarzenegger dud “Jingle All the Way” look like “Citizen Kane” with this candy-coated piece of schmaltz.

“Edward Scissorhands: Anniversary Edition” - Speaking of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, their first pairing has been re-released on DVD to capitalize on the success of “Charlie.” The DVD is exactly the same as the previous release, but for a few extra bucks, you can get it in a tin (OOH...AAH!). In spite of this unnecessary repackaging, the movie is still worth checking out (my fave Burton flick), and the THX-approved transfer is very good. Too bad there aren’t more worthwhile extras...
