Knox coughs up Turkey

For the Turkey Bowl game this year, there was a challenge between Knox and Monmouth brought back from the pages of the more than 110 year rivalry’s history—and it didn’t involve the infamous rowdy student fans but the prestigious presidents of both schools.

Monmouth College President Mauri Ditzler and Knox President Roger Taylor decidedly brought back the wager from its 2001 beginning. This wager involved the losing school’s president delivering 10 frozen turkeys to the other winning school’s town food pantry.

As has happened since the wager began, Knox has given the Jamieson food pantry in Monmouth the turkeys, and has donated once again due to the school’s 0-48 loss this year.

“I love college rivalries; football often plays an important part in keeping those rivalries alive,” said President Ditzler. “Rivalries often push us to excel, bringing out the very best from everyone involved. In this case, one small aspect of the rivalry is that it pushes us to make donations to those in our community who are hungry. Few causes are as important as reaching out to those in our midst who need a bit of assistance in difficult times.”
