Basketball off to impressive starts
Men and women now look to surprise conference
Monmouth College basketball has started, and both the men and the women are full of new faces along with veterans that could send a spark through the Midwest Conference. The most impressive turnaround will come from the women, who in the last two years have only won 12 games combined. The men look to repeat their 04-05 season, but hope to make that jump into the playoff scene, which they fell just short of one year ago.
Both teams played their first games of the year on Nov. 19. The women played at home against Robert Morris College- Springfield. The women hung strong with the Redhawks that won 22 games last year for 37 minutes. The Scots were up 77-75 and then began to fall to mistakes in the final minutes. The Scots had an over and back violation, a missed lay up, and failed to box out the free throw shooter twice until time ran out on the clock. The women ended up falling short to the Redhawks 89-80. The Scots were forced to foul and watched as the Redhawks hit their freethrows down the stretch to pull away. Read More...

The Scots took an early 3-0 lead before yielding 62 straight points to the Johnnies. Junior Doug Stichter got the Scots off to a hot start. He intercepted St. Johns quarterback Alex Kofoed on the second play of the game. Read More...

Knox coughs up Turkey
For the Turkey Bowl game this year, there was a challenge between Knox and Monmouth brought back from the pages of the more than 110 year rivalry’s history—and it didn’t involve the infamous rowdy student fans but the prestigious presidents of both schools.
Monmouth College President Mauri Ditzler and Knox President Roger Taylor decidedly brought back the wager from its 2001 beginning. This wager involved the losing school’s president delivering 10 frozen turkeys to the other winning school’s town food pantry. Read More...
Mitch Tanney
Mitch Tanney is embracing a new nomination while playing football at Monmouth College and only losing two games in the two years he’s been here. Tanney is one of the finalists for the Gagliardi Trophy, which is considered the DIII Heisman. This represents the excellence on the playing field and in the classroom. The NCAA DIII committee gives this award out to student-athletes that are above the rest in the classroom in athletics, and community service. Tanney has been named to the Dean’s List six times and volunteers as a Spanish instructor and helps out with Special Olympics. “This is a tribute to Mitch’s hard work, upbringing and dedication to the balance between athletics and academics,” said Coach Steve Bell. “I can think of no other player who is more deserving of this honor for what he has done for Monmouth College as a whole.” The winner will be determined committee and will be announced on Dec. 15.
Anthony Welty
Anthony Welty received the Ruth Peterson/Roy W. LeClere Award. This honor is bestowed to the senior Midwest Conference men’s and women’s student-athletes who post the highest grade point averages during their junior years while lettering in at least two league sports. Welty is the second fighting Scot to win the award in the schools history. The last MC athlete to win was Brent Thurness, who claimed the award during the 1989-1990 winter season. Welty has been a team leader for every one of the men’s track teams. He has earned All-MWC honors five times between cross country and track and is a seven-time MWC Academic All-Conference selection. Welty has preformed equally as well in the classroom as he has made the Dean’s list every semester since he arrived on the MC campus.
