A Letter from the Editor
By Marisa Kratochvil
Change. This is the word that comes to my mind as I think of this school year. After a three month vacation from students taking shortcuts across the quad and the “lunch rush” at the Underground, Monmouth College is ready for more change, and with this change comes a new freshmen class, the addition of North Hall and, not to mention, Mauri Ditzler, MC's new President. Being a senior, I have seen this college change, and not just in the three years I have been here. I am what you would call a “legacy” at MC.
I came to know the campus through my father Thomas, '73 who was on the All-Conference, 1972 undefeated football team. Visiting since I was a little girl in the 1980s, on the hill by Bobby Woll Memorial Field, I remember the campus being barren and dull. Now, since the efforts put forth by former MC President Richard Giese and the college administration, MC's enrollment has been growing exponentially along with the expansion of the campus through new academic and residential buildings. I, along with the rest of the student body, am anticipating what new ideas President Ditzler has in store for the college. In addition to the campus changing, I would like to announce a change in The Courier. This year not only has our pressroom been renovated due to a major leakage problem over the summer months, but the newspaper has expanded, as you can see, from 8 to 12-pages.
The addition of four pages has allowed my Executive Staff and me to better cover campus news and sports, along with entertainment and enjoyable reading material for the student body. Before, in my opi ion, The Courier had the potential to be something better, but it was never challenged. Now, I have been put in this position to make the paper more than just newsprint and ink. I hope students will now read The Courier for enjoyment purposes rather than just as an alternative to being bored.
Personally, I hope you all enjoy the “Glad Plaid” page since it is geared towards entertaining and not informing. I am very excited to start the year on a positive note and I hope you are all sharing the same feelings.
Let's face it, change is inevitable, but it does not have to have a negative implication. This year will be redefined as a way to make life better and more enjoyable. So, sit back and enjoy the view.
