MC to help Hurricane Katrina victims

On Sept. 7, President Mauri Ditzler announced MC will open its doors to students and faculty who have been displaced due to Hurrsicane Katrina’s massive destruction. This tropical cyclone has affected thousands of lives in Louisiana, Mississippi, the Florida Panhandle and Alabama.

It is estimated that over 100,000 students and 1,000 faculty members in the Gulf Coast region have been hurt by this disaster. Institutions such as the University of New Orleans, Tulane University and Loyola University, all located in New Orleans, LA were forced to close for the fall semester to all incoming as well as returning students because of Hurricane Katrina’s damage. MC’s Annual Matriculation and Freshmen Walkout

At 4p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, Monmouth College held its 152nd Annual Matriculation ceremony on Wallace Hall Plaza.

Speakers for the ceremony were Rev. Dr. B. Kathleen Fannin, chaplin; John Klockertager, vice president for enrollment; Dr. Rajkumar Ambrose, vice president for academic affairs; Brandie Miller, Student Senate President; Margaret Donnelly, President Tau Pi Chapter of Mortar Board and, making his first matriculation appearance, President Dr. Mauri Ditzler... Introducing Dr. Mauri Ditzler to campus

The walls of Wallace Hall have seen 12 presidents come and go since 1853 and this year it has opened its doors to yet another: Dr. Mauri Ditzler, Monmouth College’s 13th president.

“I look forward to spending the upcoming months learning the core values of the college,” Ditzler stated. “As a community, we will develop strategies to sustain the existing momentum and explore ways to make an excellent college even better.” Read More...

That’s Ireland!

During 600-150 B.C. Celtic tribes arrived on the island of Ireland , and in the 12th century the English started to invade. This resulted in seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggles, which enforced a rebellion within the land.

The split of Ireland came about in the unsuccessful Easter Rising of 1916 and followed by the War of Independence transformed the political landscape in Ireland. The north of the island became Northern Ireland , which remained apart of the United Kingdom ( England , Scotland and Wales ), and the south was known as the Republic of Ireland . In addition, Ireland is also divided into four provinces – Ulster , Munster , Leinster and Connaugh -and within these four provinces are 32 counties: Northern Ireland consists of six counties and the Republic of Ireland consists of 26 counties. Sig Ep awarded Buc Cup

The Illinois Gamma Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon, Monmouth College 's largest fraternity, won one of the national fraternity's 28 Buchanan Outstanding Chapter Awards during the 2004-2005 scholastic year.

During the year, the men achieved a 4.0 GPA, the highest cumulative GPA for college fraternities and, commenting on the fraternity's success, President C.O. Varnes said, “This is a huge accomplishment for such a small school and chapter since there are 257 chapters nationwide. The chapter is extremely excited to have won this award.” Read More...

A Letter from the Editor

Change. This is the word that comes to my mind as I think of this school year. After a three month vacation from students taking shortcuts across the quad and the “lunch rush” at the Underground, Monmouth College is ready for more change, and with this change comes a new freshmen class, the addition of North Hall and, not to mention, Mauri Ditzler, MC’s new President. Being a senior, I have seen this college change, and not just in the three years I have been here. I am what you would call a “legacy” at MC. Read More...

Monmouth College had the pleasure of hiring two new faculty members this year, Vance Pierce, coordinator of intercultural life, and Sarah Graham, director of choral activities and vocal studies.
