As the saying goes, “there is no zealot like a convert,” and to say the least, the leaders of The Covenant Group are eager to get the club under way. At the end of last school year, the Monmouth Student Senate approved a new campus organization, The Covenant Group, a Christian faith-based organization. After reviewing the constitution and meeting with the executive board of the club, the Senate gave its approval and made the proposed new club a reality for Monmouth campus life. According to the leaders of the Group, it looks to improve the spiritual atmosphere at Monmouth College . The group is lead by seniors A. J. Danielson and Dave Danaher, juniors Amanda Havens and Christy Wakefield, and sophomore Ian Van Anden. The members say the group hopes to provide alternative activities for students at Monmouth College that will be an escape from drinking alcohol or, worse yet, doing nothing at all with their free time. The Covenant had a table at the Involvement Fair where they found a good deal of interest in what the club advocates.
The first official campus activity for the club was a $100.00 raffle; the prize for the winner was a tub full of goods used by college students. The leaders said this was just the beginning of the fun, though, as many events are planned for the future.
The Covenant is inviting people to join them on trips to the Quad Cities where they will play laser tag and go to the movies. The date for this activity has not been determined. They also invite people to attend their regular meetings where they will have social events and discuss and further refine the objectives of the group. They will also conduct Bible studies to recognize what they call the Christian voice of the group. Meetings will be held on Tuesdays (Grier Hall), Wednesdays (North Hall) and Thursdays (Cleland Hall). All meetings start at 8 p.m.
The Covenant Group currently has about 25 members and is hoping to expand as the school year progresses. The group leaders say everyone is invited to “come to Christ” and join the club. They promise to provide a fun and healthy atmosphere through studying Christianity and bringing Christian fellowship to MC campus life.
