Co-owner of Cardinals gives Whiteman Lecture

Monmouth College had the privilege of welcoming Andrew N. Baur, chairman of the board of Southwest Bank and co-owner of the St. Louis Cardinals, when he spoke at the Wendell Whiteman Memorial Lecture at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20 in the Dahl Chapel and Auditorium.

After a welcome by President Ditzler and an introduction by business major and MC baseball player, Joshua Ragar ’06, Baur delivered a speech entitled, “The Economics of Baseball” which discussed the business behind the game. Ahoy! Family Weekend

“Ahoy Maties: Land Mon-mouth College,” is this year’s Family Weekend theme, which will be held this weekend, Sept. 23-25.

This year’s events were put together by the Association for Student Activity Programming (ASAP) members; Stephanie Kennedy, assistant director of campus events; and the two head chairs of the committee, sophomores Joanna Martorelli and Sara Mendez. Read More...

MC professor’s first book
gets friendly reviews

In the past 18 months, Monmouth College history professor Simon Cordery has received positive reviews of his first book, “British Friendly Societies, 1750-1914.”

Published in 2003, Cordery had been performing research frequently between 1984 and 2001, with his primary sources taken from records of societies, newspapers and government documents. Read More...

Past and the present

Northern Ireland’s population is divided into two religious sectors: Protestant (55%) and Catholic (45%), with the Northern Ireland lying at the core of a political conflict, which has been known internationally since the sixteenth century.

Since the island of Ireland was separated in 1921, Northern Ireland united with Britain and the southern twenty-six counties remained independent. As a result, two independent government institutions have been created. Read More...

Celebrating diversity

MC’s annual Intercultural Fest

Monmouth College’s 11th annual Intercultural Festival, which took place Saturday, Sept. 17 on Dunlap Terrace, drew a large crowd of hungry and interested visitors.

The festival featured entertainment, cuisine and depicted different cultures from around the world.

This event was sponored by Intercultural Life and included a 45-minute show featuring different kinds of dancing. Read More...

A Letter from the Editor

Another “Family Week-end” is around the corner and, looking back on my past three years, I do not think students really understand the meaning behind this event.

As a freshmen, “Family Weekend” is meant to be a time to reconnect with your family after being seperated for a month. I know, being the youngest child in my family, that not seeing the most important people in my life for one month was rather tough. I muddled through it by being active and socializing, but it took effort. Read More...

Student Senate

The first Student Senate meeting was held on Tuesday, Sept. 13 in the Highlander Room in the Stockdale Center.

Elected at the end of last year, Brandie Miller was appointed the position of president and Richard Harrod as the vice president.

The meeting was called to order at 6:33 p.m.and the first topic of the evening was the approval of the executive board for 2005-2006: Sara Youngs, secretary; Adam Riegle, treasurer; Emily Zvolanek. parliamentarian and Mollie Williams, student affairs representative. Read More...

ATW helps local community

On Saturday, Sept. 17, 27 brothers of the Epsilon Nu chapter of the Alpha Tau Omega (ATW) Fraternity put together a playground set for the town of Smithshire, IL located 16 miles southwest of Monmouth.

Kenneth Blair, assistant director of Greek Life, mentioned the project to David Gerth ’08, philanthropy chairman of ATW, after the public grounds coordinator from Smithshire contacted Blair. Read More...

brings spice to MC

As Monmouth College rings in a new school year, it brings in new faculty members.

Amy Caldwell de Farias is the new associate professor of American and Latin American Histories.

De Farias comes to Monmouth from Portland, OR where she taught at Lewis and Clark College for one and a half years. Read More...

Movies by “moonlight”

Galesburg Drive-in re-opened

The newly restored Blue Moonlight Drive-in Theater, located at 2875 W. Main St. in Galesburg, unvieled its screens to the public on Friday, Aug. 5 after being closed for 25 years.

The owners, Ron and Teresa Carlson, began the restoration in April 2004 and, with much time and effort, it was completed in a little over a year. Read More...
