Keeping campus beautiful

In light of Pete Loomis’ retirement as director of facilities management, Earl Wilfong was hired by Monmouth College in July to fill the position.

Previously working at Milliken University as a manager of custodial maintenance for about three years, Wilfong knew he wanted to take on a more demanding position, such as director.

He has been dealing with this area of work for 15 years in the previous towns of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; Springhill College, Alabama and in Decatur, Illinois.

As a result, he was prepared to take the place of the recently retired Loomis.

Don Gladfelter, vice president for finance and business said, “I am very pleased to have been able to hire someone with Earl’s knowledge and experience.”

According to Wilfong, “I chose Monmouth because I thought the campus was beautiful, which tells a lot about the campus community.”

He also liked MC because of its size: how it was small enough to see and get to know many people on campus.

In addition, he saw how the college was growing and wanted to be a part of it.

Gladfelter added, “We had a strong pool of applicants to choose from and Earl was our top choice. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Wilfong commented, “Another thing I enjoy about my job is meeting different people in the departments.”

According to Wilfong, the best thing about his job is that nothing is routine: he comes in everyday, knowing that eventually he will go home that evening.

He stated, “I’ve never lived in a town for more than five years, and I’m planning for this to be my last job.”

Wilfong also knows what is expected of his job: to get what the college needs, whether it be remolding a new classroom, thinking of construction plans for a new office or just managing day to day operations.

Soon after assuming the position, Wilfong started the remodeling of Tom Withenbury’s office, director of student publications, and the press room for The Courier due to a leakage problem over the summer.

He also caught the tailend of what needed to be done on North Hall and the finishing touches on Fulton.

Currently, Wilfong does not see a new project coming up anytime soon. However, in the near future, he sees his department thinking of new plans for a science building.

Wilfong stated, “The Physical Plant department does a great job, and I could not do my job without their support.”
