Student Senate

The second Student Senate meeting of the semester was held on Tuesday, Sept. 27 in the Highlander Room in Stockdale Center.
President Brandie Miller called the meeting to order at 6:33 p.m. Minutes from the previous meeting were approved.
Attendance was taken via sign-in sheets. Secretary Sara Youngs announced that member lists need to be turned in by next week.
There were no officer reports following attendance and Committee Breakouts followed.
President Miller encouraged all to join a committee so voices would be heard and it is required in order to vote in any proceedings.
The meeting reconvened after discussion ceased.
Student Affairs liaison, Mollie Williams said the committee was concerned with security consistency on campus.
They also discussed the distractions of lawn mowing at 8 a.m. and the issue of ash trays in front of Graham Hall and the Frat-ernity Complex. It was also reported that students should be out of lounges and into rooms in the next two weeks.
The Food Service committee reported 1,500 people attended Family Weekend last weekend.
The Underground will also have new menus starting soon and a Scotland Yard salad option has also been implemented.
The Finance committee, led by Adam Riegle, confirmed committee members.
There will be a Finance meeting next Monday, Oct. 3 and Tuesday, Oct. 4 to go over applications and on Thursday, Oct. 5, the committee will meet to go over the budget.
Scots’ Day liaison, Chris Bastean, reported that he “hopes to make this year’s Scots’ Day” one to remember.
The Information Systems committee reported no problems thus far.
A suggestion was made to check into the number of library laptops available.
There was no Old Business.
Under New Business, discussion was opened concerning the Student Senate Constitution.
Parliamentarian Emily Zvolanek presented a power point concerning problems with the current Student Senate Constitution.
She stated, “The current Constitution is ambiguous, outdated and inconsistent.”
Student Senate members then voted on whether to change a stipulation with voting.
A two-thirds votes cast will now be the criteria for the passage of the new Constitution.
Suggestions were then taken by President Miller on how to effectively vote on the new Constitution.
Some suggestions included publication in The Courier, as well as the message board.
Most agreed that sitting at tables during eating hours would be the most effective was for people to cast votes.
Vice President Richard Harrod went on to discuss the revamping of the Student Senate website.
New designs can be submitted to President Miller or Vice President Harrod.
Announcements followed New Business and Secretary Youngs encouraged people to inform her if new nametags needed to be made for a group or organization.
Also, copies of the new Student Senate Constitution are available upon request. A.S.A.P. representative, Johanna announced Stress Relief Day and a DUI simulator as upcoming events.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:26 p.m. The next Student Senate meeting will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Highlander Room.
