The Monmouth Lady Scots tennis team traveled to Beloit, Wisc. on Saturday Sept. 24 and played against Beloit College and St. Norbert College.
The Lady Scots split a pair of contests. The Lady Scots blasted Beloit College 7-2. In the second match, St. Norbert College edged the Lady Scots 5-4.
The day was a nice 70 degrees with overcast for the first match against Beloit College and an unfortunate rain out for the second match against St. Norbert’s, so the players had to continue their matches inside.
According to head coach Greg Stacey, “Being indoors is a lot better, because the ladies do not have to worry about wind, but it was a lot more humid inside.”
In the singles competitions against Beloit College: 1) Shauna Skowronski (MC) defeated Erin Stamper (BC) 6-1, 7-6, 7-5. 2) Sally Fairfield (BC) defeated Sara Yerks (MC) 6-3, 6-3. 3) Cassandra Frantz (MC) defeated Sidra Montgomery (BC) 6-2, 6-1. 4) Brittany Donnelly (MC) defeated Kate McLaughlin (BC) 6-4, 6-3. 5) Holly Trotter (MC) defeated Morgan Maul-Smith (BC) 6-4, 6-0. 6) Rachel Atherton (MC) defeated Emily Maroney (BC) 7-5, 2-6, 10-8.

The two ladies to look out for this season are Holly Trotter and Sara Yerks who are 5 and 0 doubles partners. Coach Stacey mentioned, “Holly and Sara are the big surprise. They did not play last year and now play well together.”
So far the ladies tennis team has worked very hard and Coach Greg Stacey said, “I’m really pleased with the way the season has gone and the ladies have put in a lot of effort. We may not be the most talented team, but they never give up.”
For the weekend the ladies will be at Grinnell College on Saturday, Oct. 1 and will be playing at Monmouth on Sunday against Illinois College at 1:30 p.m.
