MC goes on lockdown

Beginning in the spring semester of 2006, Monmouth College enforced the policy of all residence halls having 24 hour lockdown.

“Many of the Monmouth College students have expressed their concern with the dorm buildings being unlocked, allowing anyone who wants to come in and out of the buildings as they choose,” said Mohsin Masood, associate dean of students and director of resident life.

“It is important to think ahead,” said Masood.

According to Masood there have not been any major security problems in the past, there have been minor ones, such as theft, vandalism and unsolicited vendors. Masood predicts that enforcing this policy will prevent any major harm or damage to be done in the future.

With the safety of the students in mind, students will only be able to enter their own residence buildings with their own keys.

Masood has found that, “There has not been any negative reaction to this new policy and that most of the students realize that it is positive and in their favor.”

However, according to Katie Hamilton, resident of Bowers Hall, “It is some what of an inconvenience because you have to go let people in if they are coming over and you always have to fumble around with your keys.”

Monmouth College has researched and looked at other schools similar to our size and found that this is the way most of those schools are run.

“It is not like a big university where there is a front desk to check in and even security guards standing there right as the students enter the buildings,” said Masood.
