Monmouth College has educated many exemplary people and one man in particular, Stephen Jonson ’72, is now serving the country in Iraq as a Major General of the Marine Corps.
While attending Monmouth College, he shared how it influenced him in the long run, especially in his career today.
Jonson had not planned on joining the Marines; he was drafted after college and found himself making it a living after 33 years.
There appeared to be no regret in his choice, especially with his college sweetheart, Lucy Hyde, along with their two children by his side.
“Take advantage of the liberal arts opportunities,” he stated.
Jonson believed the main purpose of MC is to widen a student’s education by studying subjects not necessarily in thiermajor.
Jonson added, “Study a little history and learn to speak another language.”
Without MC, he commented, he would not have been influenced by such professors as Dr. Milt Bowman, Dr. Fox, Dr. Herbsleb and Dr. Speel.
“These professors, in particular, expected us to be mature, responsible students; they set high standards and expected us to meet them.”
He also would not be the person he is today if it were not for his brothers from the ATO fraternity.
MC made Jonson believe he was able to “learn the value of loyalty and realize how privileged we are as Americans.”
