The Associated Students of Monmouth College (ASMC) held its first meeting of the new semester on Tue., Jan. 24.

The meeting was called to order at 6:31 p.m.

President Brandie Miller started the meeting with officer reports. President Miller thanked all the senators for attending the first meeting, and she hopes for a “very good semester.” In addition, she “encourages everyone to get involved.”

Vice President Richard Harrod had no report.

Sara Youngs asked the senators if they would like to be on the ASMC mailing list. Please forward your e-mail address to her if you are interested.

Treasurer Adam Riegle stated that the next funding cycle is tentatively planned for the week of March 13.

Parliamentarian Emily Zvolanek said that ASMC elections are quickly approaching and there are new criteria to apply for either the President or Vice President position. Any questions can be answered by either Zvolanek or Lauren Swanson.

Student Affairs representative Mollie Williams had no report.

Next, there were committee breakouts which lasted 10 minutes.

The Student Affairs committee brought up several important points. The side doors of McMichael are not shutting all the way which is a problem since MC is on lockdown.

Also, the committee would like the sidewalks to be salted more often if the weather does not improve. A senator asked if there was an alternative to salt, such as sand and Williams said she would look into it.

Williams also said that there seems to be a problem with North Hall’s showers and the water in the International House is cold.

Despite the water or shower problems in other dorms, the committee was proud to announce that the shower on the third floor of Grier Hall was finally fixed.

Many new things were going on in the Food Service committee. According to a survey from last semester, MC students wanted more vegetarian options. Bruce Cvancara, dining services director, is working hard to make that possible.

Intercultural Life will sponsor a meal in the main dining room sometime this semester. The chair said that the ice cream which was out of order last semester will be operating soon after parts come in to repair it.

Riegle said that vacancies in the finance committee have been filled, and he is looking forward to a “good and successful third funding cycle.” $8,845 of ASMC’s funds were distributed in the first and second funding cycles.

Riegle encourages organizations to use the money in their accounts before year end. Applications for the third cycle will be made available two weeks prior to Spring Break.

Information Systems asked students who are having physical problems with their computers to contact the Information Systems office in Hewes Library.

President Miller and Vice President Harrod chaired the Scot’s Day committee. At this time, they are coming up with themes such as Scottish pride and the Boardwalk. Also, they talked about possible games that can be played such as jousting, an obstacle course and a mechanical bull.

Another possibility is an area watched by the faculty where alcoholic beverages can be purchased and consumed by those of age.

Cvancara would like to incorporate a new menu this year instead of the usual barbeque.

If you are interested in being a part of the Scot’s Day committee, President Miller encourages you to go to the ASAP meetings or talk with Stephanie Kennedy, assistant director of campus events.

As mentioned before, ASMC elections are coming up. It will be held on April 18 and will last all day. Swanson asked for volunteers to watch the table.

There was no old business.

Vice President Harrod talked about new business. At this time, there is a need to fill vacancies for faculty committee representatives.

There are four openings in the public affairs committee which picks the speakers who come to MC, and one opening in FIDC which is the finance committee which determines faculty sabbaticals and funds for new faculty.

Jacquelyn Condon, vice president for student life, said, “Your voice is just really important” in either of these committees.

There were many announcements in week.

SEA is sponsoring a dance on Saturday which will benefit the rain forest. It will be called “Jungle Boogie.” Tickets for the dance are $5 per person and it will be held in the Highlander Room from 7 to 11:30 p.m.

French Club is sponsoring a free film festival showing French films in the Dahl Chapel at 7 p.m. on Thursdays.

La Raza will hold its first meeting next Tuesday at 7 p.m. to plan further meetings and events.

Dean Condon ended the meeting by informing ASMC that the five men who lived in the Science House are doing fine despite the fire which tore through the house on Monday.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:15 p.m. The next meeting will be held in on Tuesday, Feb. 7 in the Highlander Room in the Stockdale Center.
