Coach Roger Haynes, head men and women's track coach, says that he was pleasantly surprised at Monmouth College's indoor track meet last Saturday. The men did an outstanding job by placing first overall and the women placing second. Both teams also improved their times from last weekends meet.
Jonny Henkins was the stand-out this past weekend. He became an NCAA provisional qualifier with a performance of 15'9" in the pole vault event. Jenkins is currently sixth in the country for division three. He is easily on his way to becoming an All-American if he clears 16'0".
MC hosted the Midwest Invitational last Saturday. Both the men and the women left the day with accomplished results. First place accomplishments were achieved by Tyler Rundle- 400m, Kel Bond- mile, Darin VanNattan-500m, Nick Long- 55m hurdles, and Rundle, Brad Gross, Tim Meredith, Dante Daniels-4x200 relay.
"Our primary goal is to have every athlete improve throughout the season," states Haynes. Many men and women showed development in their personal times from the Knox meet two weeks ago. These runners and field players included Aaron Daverin-55m, Anthony Welty-mile, and Jeff Rebholz-shot put.
In the 55m hurdles Shannon Turczyn, Ashley Widdop, and Marike Bacon all had good races. Lizmeth Sandoval placed 3rd in the 800m along with Sara Ingersoll, Kila Cox, Joni Nelson and Valerie Daves placing 3rd in the 4x200 relay.
Haynes also adds that he is very pleased with the many new quality people to join the team this season. "We hope to set a high standard as far as the workload goes. I expect them to work hard and they usually do," says Haynes.
The Scots' upcoming schedule is very solid with a lot of division one, two, and three competition all around the Midwest. The primary goal of this well-developed indoor track team is to take many athletes to the NCAA indoor meet and earn All-American honors.
The Scots leave for Indiana for an all day meet on Saturday February fourth. The next men and women's home indoor meet is February eleventh. Come support your Fighting Scots.
