A dual farewell to the Draves

In the eyes of a Monmouth College science major, students know exactly who I am talking about when I mention the names Jeffrey and Patricia Draves.

Patricia Draves, current chair of the biochemistry department and associate professor of chemistry, and Jeffrey Draves, chair and associate professor of the chemistry department, will be leaving Monmouth College at the end of the spring semester.

Starting in August 2002, Monmouth College was fortunate to have Patricia teach the courses of general chemistry, biochemistry, advanced biochemistry, Issues and Ideas, Introduction to Liberal Arts (ILA) and an honors course.

Jeffrey teaches the upper division physical chemistry, introduction to environmental science, ILA and the cultural chemistry courses.  Read More...

Monmouth-Knox rivalry escalates

Monmouth and Knox College have had a rivalry for years, but one MC student is regretting taking it too far.

Two weeks ago, Monmouth hosted Knox College in the annual men’s and women’s basketball games.

At the start of the game, the announcer read the “Statement of Spectator Behavior.” The beginning of this statement states “we promote courteous and respectful behavior by student athletes, coaches and spectators.” Read More...

Prospectives on campus

College decisions can be tough, but watching current music students perform in a concert may have made some high school seniors’ decisions a bit easier.

Pick me! Tips to write the perfect resume

A great resume can serve this purpose and gives reason as to why it is important to treat your resume as a marketing tool. “It’s important to focus on the assets you bring to the table, and it’s even more important not to forget every career tidbit,” said Teena Rose, columnist, public speaker and certified/published resume writer.  Read More...

Growing Pains:

Communication breakdown

Monmouth College thrives because of what it is—a small, friendly, liberal arts institution. Granted, we are currently not classified as a liberal arts college, but certainly we can still maintain our identity as a small and friendly institution. However, due to our recent growth, part of our identity is being lost, and a great deal of that has to do with an internal resistance to understanding and working with the various departments of this institution.  Read More...

2006 Quadrennial Defense Review 101 and You

In truth, “military intelligence” could not be further from an oxymoron. For those that beg to differ, I challenge you to make sense of the 2006 Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) released February 6. The document is required to be submitted to Congress on behalf of the Pentagon once every four years. Read More...

Letter from the Editor

Where do we draw the line with “trash talking”?

In light of the recent Monmouth-Knox basketball game incident, this will be the last of its discussion (if I can help it). Regardless of my position at The Courier, I am a Monmouth College student as well and commend Nick Bush for his forthright letter in regards to the incident. Read More...

It’s Spanish, no English... or is it Spanglish?

Many who walk the streets of Latino neighborhoods will hear conversations like the one at the top of the article. This is a phenomenon that is increasingly growing in the Latin American community here in the states. It is called Spanglish in English and in Spanish this phenomena is called Espangles. But when did it start? Why is it so popular?  Read More...
