The Associated Students of Monmouth College (ASMC) held a meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 21 in HT 109.
President Brandie Miller called the meeting to order at 6:32 p.m. and the minutes from the Feb.7 meeting were approved.
President Miller asked the senators to update the ASMC member list for the TNT Center.
Treasurer Adam Reigle stated the third funding cycle is approaching. Applications for organizations have been sent out and must be turned in no later than midnight Friday, Mar. 3.
The funding meetings will begin the week of March 13.
Student Affairs representative, Mollie Williams, said there will not be a printer put in Liedman Hall. If that happened, the College would have to put printers in all residence halls.
Discussion concerning book lists to be distributed in the summer for MC courses is currently happening.
Vice President, Clerk and Parliamentarian had no reports.
Dan Bliss gave the report for the Funding and Institutional Development (FID) committee. Salary recommendations were reviewed for next year, as well as the sabbatical requests.
Dean Condon’s subcommittee is looking issues with MC’s international students. The committee feels there was not an adequate orientation for the international students at the beginning of the year, as well as at the start of this semester.
In addition, the committee will look at how the international students can connect with the regular students on campus and deal with English as a second language issue.
Bliss commented if there were any concerns in the classroom about any subject to please contact him.
Ben Sauer gave the update on the Curriculum committee.
All student applicants for the international program were approved; it was a non-competitive year and all students who applied and qualified for the program were formally accepted.
The first seven courses for the global perspectives study were approved.
This is an important issue due to the fact that Monmouth College is changing its general education requirements.
Committee breakouts followed the faculty committee reports.
The ice cream machine is finally working in the Main Dining Room, the chef has found a new granola recipe and the kitchen is working hard to keep up with demand.
Some students have complained about the taste of the carbonated beverages and Bruce Cvancara, director of dining services, will ask Pepsi to come and check the lines.
Cvancara will put milk cartons and bottled water in Scotland Yard so there is an alternative to the carbonated beverages.
In addition, employees have been made cognizant of what is in the food in Scotland Yard, the box lunch program has been audited and Cvancara hopes this will resolve any future problems.
The Student Affairs committee talked about getting slip stoppers in the showers in Liedman Hall. There has also been an interest for vending machines in North Hall and more bulletin boards have been requested by North Hall staff.
There was no old business.
Vice President Richard Harrod said there is a vacancy in the Admission and Academic Status committee; one officer is needed and the committee meets once a week at 9 a.m. on Thursdays.
Harrod said, “This is a great way to make your voice heard to the faculty.”
There were also several announcements.
Jane T. Jakoubek has been named the new vice president for academic affairs. Her term will begin on July 1.
President Miller strongly urges students to read the MC news release about Jakoubek and stated that she will be positive for MC.
Liedman Hall sponsored a game tournament on Tuesday, Feb.21 in the Highlander Room of the Stockdale Center. Texas Hold ’em and Go Fish were the featured games.
The first Latin dance lesson will be this Saturday, Feb. 25 in the aerobics room of the Trotter Fitness Center.
Pepperoni’s Pizza would like to thank the MC campus for helping them stay in business.
According to Chris Bastean, Pepperoni’s manager, Pepperoni’s will offer pizzas outside of the fraternity complex on Fridays and Saturdays less than the MC special.
Again, the Draves are leaving MC at the end of the semester and Sauer askedthose who know the Draves to say your heartfelt goodbyes to the chairs of the chemistry and biochemistry departments.
The last French film was on Thursday, Feb.23.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:04 p.m.
