In the February 20, 2006 edition of Time magazine, it ran an exclusive story on the fraternity they said is leading the way in destroying the “frat” boy image.
Entitled, “Taming the Toga, as campuses fight boorish behavior; the nation’s largest fraternity seeks a manners makeover,” this article discussed different events that the fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon has done in chapters all over the nation, to prove that brothers in this fraternity are not just “frat” boys but fraternity men.
It also discussed the member development program Sigma Phi Epsilon has put into place, called The Balanced Man Project, where the men promote the sound mind and sound body philosophy.
Many of the chapters across the nation have transitioned into this particular model, including the local chapter here at Monmouth College.
Some of the events these chapters are holding are etiquette dinners, cooking lessons, dance classes and even yoga. Here, at the Illinois Gamma chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon, the brothers have also set up some of these exchanges.
A week prior to spring break, the women of Kappa Kappa Gamma joined the men of Sigma Phi Epsilon for a yoga exchange.
The event turned into a success and the chapter has continued to hold yoga events in their first floor lounge since.
