ASMC elections 2006:
Rules for presidential and vice-presidential candidates

Preface:

All candidates are expected to abide by the following rules and regulations. Any violations or infractions of these rules will be reviewed by the Student Elections Commission and may result in the disqualification of the candidate.

I. REQUIREMENTS FOR PRESIDENT AND VICE-PRESIDENT POSITIONS OF THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF MONMOUTH COLLEGE (ASMC).

A candidate must be a full time student who:

A. has been a senator of the ASMC who have attended at least 75% of ASMC meetings in that academic year (two semesters preceding the election, including the semester the election occurs within) prior to the election filing deadline, established annually by the Student Elections Commission, as certified by the Clerk.

B. be in good academic standing and hold at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA.

II. PETITION RULES

A. The candidate must submit a petition signed by at least 25% of the active student body. This is a total of 335 signatures. It is advisable to get this amount plus another 25 signatures to avoid duplicates and to ensure the petition will be accepted.

B. All Monmouth College students are eligible to sign each petition once. Duplicate signatures on a given petition will be disqualified.

C. The candidate must sign his or her petition only where designated. He or she cannot use his or her signature as one of the required.

D. Petitions are available from the Student Elections Commission Chair as soon as interest in the position is expressed and due back in the Chair’s hands no later than April 3, 2006, at 11:59 p.m. If petitions are not received before this deadline, the candidate will be disqualified.

III. PUBLICITY RULES

A. Publicity may begin five days before the first day of election, on April 8, 2006, at 6 a.m. The Student Elections Commission Chair will contact the candidates the night before to confirm the publicity period.

B. The candidates are responsible for all publicity bearing their names.

C. Candidates must show consideration for other candidates and should not engage in any libelous or slanderous statements directed towards the other candidates. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, libel is defined as a spoken or written statement or a representation that gives an unjustly unfavorable impression of a person or thing. Slander is defined as a false report maliciously uttered and tending to injure the reputation of a person. Libel or slander will be determined by the Student Elections Commission.

D. No publicity may be posted in such a manner as to damage or deface personal or public property or grounds.

E. The Stockdale Center Manager must approve all publicity posted in the Stockdale Center. Failure to do so will revoke the ability to advertise in the Stockdale Center.

F. Candidates may require airtime or newspaper space to campaign with campus media, but must meet requirements of Rules A and C under the publicity section.

G. Candidates may run online websites to promote their campaign, but must adhere to Rules A and C under the publicity section.

H. During the actual election time, there will be NO campaigning in the lobby of the Stockdale Center.

I. Campus media (WMCR, The Courier) may be used during the election time, but again must meet the requirements of Rule C of the publicity section.

J. It is necessary that all candidates respect the size limit of 22” x 28” when making posters.

K. The Student Elections Commission Chair will monitor all advertising/publicity. Any matters that may be considered as breaking one of the aforementioned rules will result in an immediate meeting with the Student Elections Commission Chair, to be followed by disciplinary actions taken by the Committee, which can include disqualification from the race.

IV. VOTING REGULATIONS

A. Any full time student may vote one time for the position of President and Vice-President of the Associated Students of Monmouth College from the hours of 8 a.m. through 10 p.m. on April 18, 2006.

V. STUDENT ELECTIONS COMMISSION

A. The Student Elections Commission shall conduct all elections under the auspices of the Student Body Executive Board.
