The football team rebounded from their disappointing loss to Lake Forest on homecoming by beating Illinois College on Saturday, Oct. 28, 17-7.
Against IC, the Scots relied on the services of their leading rusher senior Dante Daniels. Daniels rushed for 205 yards in the game and accounted for both MC touchdowns.
Daniels’ first score came off a 44-yard run in the third quarter. The touchdown scamper was Monmouth’s first points of the game and tied the game 7-7.
The Scots were then able to put 10 more points on the scoreboard and secure the win. With 5:50 left on the clock, Daniels capped a five-play 24-yard drive with a two yard touchdown run. Monmouth’s defense supplied the offense with great field position thanks to senior Phil Kleckler’s interception. The Scots’ defense had four interceptions on the day.
Junior place kicker Nathan Palkovic ended the day’s scoring with a 32-yard field goal. The Scots left Illinois College in a three way tie for second place in the Midwest Conference football standings with Illinois College and Ripon.
Sophomore Kyle Harmon earned Midwest Conference Performer of the week honors after his performance against the Blue Boys. Harmon did all he could to prevent Illinois College from scoring.
On special teams, Harmon cut down the Blue Boys’ return man before he could reach the goal line. On the next drive, Harmon intercepted the Blue Boys quarterback in the end zone. Harmon added another interception later in the game.
The Scots’ next opponent is Knox College in the 118th Turkey Bowl. The Scots will attempt to use the same winning formula against the Prairie Fire: good defense and run effectively.
The two teams will meet at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Bobby Woll Athletic Field.
