Letter to the Editor

“A personal experience with politics” is a commentary on the current issue with negative political campaigning. My response to this is that this is a part of politics, and we need to understand that this is the world we live in today. It is nice to see that people still only care about things when it starts to affect them. This is not new in the world of politics, and now there is disgust when one person sees it in their own backyard. The only thing that I can say is that it is not that serious.

It has become a part of politics everywhere, and we need to get on with our lives. There are many things wrong with our current political system… I think a few negative ads are the least of our problems. We have terrible voter turn-out; polling places in poorer districts tend to have greater issues with machinery malfunctions and extensive waiting in order to vote. I think that a few negative ads about someone’s mom in a local election are the least of the problems that could have been addressed in the pervious paper.

It was so bad that local citizens in this country decided to take action into their own hands and video record the polling places to see how things where done and to make sure that things went well. We live in the most powerful nation in the world, and we have to have our own citizens monitoring the one institution that is supposed to protect our rights as citizens because our own government cannot ensure that our votes are going to be counted. We cannot sit around and worry about negative ads when we cannot ensure accuracy. It is time that we grow up and realize that we need to pick our battles.

As for your valiant attempt on briefly mentioning a real issue, such as the divisions of our political parties, I would like to say these parties are competing for the control of our nation and are going to want to push their own agendas. It is human to want to have power and to use it and not allow others who do not share our opinions to not partake in our power.

This is America; it is rare when we elect or put in the public spotlight people who deserve it or are smart enough to be in those positions of public authority that truly and honestly represent the people. This is a country where Bono has more political authority than our own leaders. There are greater issues than a smear campaign about some state election and her offspring who is angry at the fact that someone said mean things about her mommy.
