During December and the early days of January, while the rest of us were enjoying our time away from Monmouth, the women’s basketball team was hard at work. With the bulk of their regular season coming with little fan support, the basketball team went 6-7.
Despite a sub-.500 record the ladies did assemble a four-game winning streak. After starting the 13 break games only 1-3, the team snapped off four straight victories, the final two against Midwest conference opponents.
The highlight of this four-game hotstreak was a one-point win over Illinois College, 71-70. The following game the women handed it to rival Knox College, 85-63. Upon losing to conference foe Beloit on Jan. 12, the Scots rebounded against Ripon just a day later. The Scots beat Ripon 73-66.
Friday, Jan 19 was the ladies’ first game after returning to the classrooms, and they were on the road against fellow Midwest Conference member St. Norbert in DePere, Wis. The Scots fell to the Knights 88-81. This loss kicked off a three-game losing streak.
In the next game, the team fell to Beloit for the second time in the season, this time 83-68, in Beloit. Following that loss, the team headed to Lake Forest on Tuesday, Jan. 23, where they again lost, this time 68-57.
Next on their schedule is Grinnell College, a team who they lost to earlier in the year, in overtime. The game will be held in the Glennie Gym of Monmouth’s Huff Athletic Center. The game will also be broadcast on the Midwest Conference’s new webcast system.
