Will Marshall Hall be renovated?

The past decade has been a period of change for the Monmouth College campus. Bowers Hall, the Huff Center and North Hall are a few of the most recent additions to campus.

With plans of a new 140,000-square-foot academic building to house sciences, mathematics and business in the works, many members of the Greek community are wondering if additions, re-vamping or relocation will be made to Marshall Hall.

Marshall Hall, which sits on East Broadway, almost directly in front of the Huff Athletic Center, currently houses the chapter rooms for sororities Alpha Xi Delta, Kappa Kappa Gamma and Pi Beta Pi.

According to Michelle Merritt-Gilbert, assistant dean of students, there are no definite plans regarding Marshall Hall.

“There are just ideas about what could happen,” Merritt-Gilbert said.

“It is common knowledge that the new academic building will ‘occupy a position of prominence on East Broadway, between North Sixth and North Seventh streets.’ It has yet to be determined whether or not Marshall will be moved to the other side of Broadway,” she added.

Merritt-Gilbert added that Marshall Hall currently houses the chapters of all three sororities on campus and, as of now, it will remain that way.

According to junior Kelly Bobik, incoming president of Kappa Kappa Gamma, the idea of re-vamping Marshall Hall sounds like an excellent proposal.

“We talked about the idea of re-vamping Marshall in chapter this week and many girls are very excited with the idea of having a bigger place to hold sisterhoods and meetings. I know there are many ideas for re-structuring the building, but anything would help. With numbers expanding and more interest in Greek life at Monmouth College, re-vamping Marshall Hall is just what is needed.”

Merritt-Gilbert also added that the fact that Greek life numbers are going up has started some discussion about remodeling. At this point, the numbers are causing difficulty to meet and hold functions in the facility.

“There are a lot of great ideas, but nothing is set in stone,” Merritt-Gilbert added.

Although there are no definite plans for Marshall Hall, Monmouth College’s era of construction and re-vamping continues.

With the addition of the new science, math and business complex in the works and the new dorm closer to completion, no one can be certain of what new project will evolve next.
