Perry brings intramural spirit to Monmouth

Before this academic year, Monmouth College hired George Perry to serve as its head soccer coach. Many students do not realize, however, that Perry was also hired to serve as the director of intramurals at Monmouth and he is trying to put the intramural program on the map.
Intramurals have not exactly been a big part of the Monmouth College experience in past years. Perry is working at changing this unfortunate fact and he has many exciting ideas to assist the process.
Perry has already organized a few events last semester, including a 4 vs. 4 soccer tournament and a 5 vs. 5 basketball tournament. All the proceeds earned from those events went to “Toys for Tots.”
Although not as many teams signed up for
the tournaments last semester as Perry would have liked, Monmouth
College students have been more responsive so far this semester.
A 5 vs. 5 basketball league is currently being played, and an
impressive nine teams signed up for the league. The league began on
Jan. 29 and once all nine teams play each other in a round-robin
fashion, the four teams with the best record will compete in a
single elimination tournament.
Currently, the team Boobie Miles, whose captain is Chris Evans, is in first place with a 4-0 record.
Other activities that are happening currently are a 3 vs. 3 women’s league and a three point shoot-out contest.
Perry has many events
planned for the rest of this semester, including leagues of the
following sports: volleyball, indoor soccer, water polo and ultimate
Frisbee.
Other events will include one or two day tournaments of: badminton,
bags, Scots’ Day softball and Frisbee golf.
The process to sign up
for any of these events is all done over the internet. By visiting
the following url: “http://www.monm.edu/wellness/rec-sports/sports2.htm”
you can find a page where you can conveniently sign-up for any sport
you wish in the intramural circuit.
Perry is excited about the intramural program and says it provides a
good option for Monmouth College students.
“I am hoping we can find a positive physical outlet for all our students to engage in,” Perry said. He also noted that with the growing student body, Monmouth College will have more students who are interested in athletics and want to continue playing sports, which the intramural program will enable them to do.
What has happened this year is just the beginning of Perry’s ultimate goal, as he plans on expanding the program greatly in years to come.
Perry states that next year he plans on having competitions between each dormitory on campus and a trophy will be awarded to the champion of each event.
