As the year nears its close, many find themselves searching for what to do when summer begins. Since September, the Wackerle Career and Leadership Center has sponsored “Wackerle Wednesdays: Lunch and Learn Series” for all interested students. This program, created to aid students in career development is hosted most Wednesdays throughout the semester from 12:10-12:40 p.m. in the Tartan Room in lower level Stockdale. This semester, there are a total of twelve workshops for students to attend.
According to Michelle Shawgo, career development director of the Wackerle Center and creator of the series, the programs were really designed to help students.
“These programs are really beneficial, but few students are attending,” Shawgo remarked. “I would really like to see an attendance increase in the future. If the programs are given a chance, they really can address the needs of the students.”
Shawgo also added the number one service students utilize at the Wackerle Center is the resume critique. Many students individually make appointments with the Wackerle Center to develop or fine-tune a resume. The lunch series provides a solution. By attending “Wackerle Wednesdays,” students can receive informal, individual attention in the company of other students and friends, cutting out appointment times and schedule conflicts.
There are still several opportunities for students to attend a “Wackerle Wednesday” program and get resume tips or have a resume critiqued. Students are encouraged to bring friends and find out how to write a resume which gets attention and wins interviews. Students can also learn how to build cover letters or interview like a pro on various Wednesdays. All students are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity “Wackerle Wednesdays” can provide.
Junior Kyle Schierer feels as if “Wackerle Wednesdays” have been especially beneficial to him.
“The resume writing workshop was very helpful in helping me land a summer job and get accepted to graduate school,” Schierer said. “One of the reason’s I landed my summer job was because the organization was very impressed by the professionalism of my resume.”
Schierer added, “Overall, ‘Wackerle Wednesdays’ are crucial for students working on obtaining an ideal job. What is learned from the short presentations will open doors unseen.”
“Wackerle Wednesdays” will be held on Wednesdays during the lunch hour. Bring a lunch or just stop by for a few to hear some insightful tips on career development and leadership skills and opportunities.
Whether students need direction with careers, compiling a resume, or fine-tuning leadership skills, the series is open to all.
